International mining company Harmony Gold has chosen ABB's gearless mill drive (GMD) and ring-geared mill drive (RMD) systems for its significant Eva Copper Mine Project in Queensland, Australia.
ABB has been awarded a contract to supply GMD and RMD technologies for the Eva Copper project, an open-pit copper mine located in Queensland, Australia. With global copper demand expected to increase by 24% by 2035, the Eva Copper mine will be a major copper mine with a minimum 15-year lifespan, producing approximately 60,000 tons of copper annually.
### ABB Drive Technology Features
- The 24 MW GMD system will power the project's 40-foot SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill.
- The 18 MW variable speed, twin-pinion RMD system will be used for the 27-foot ball mill.
- The drive systems are designed for high efficiency as they are the highest power consumers on site.
- The eHouse unit will be designed and manufactured in Australia, compliant with local standards and safety requirements.
- The project's engineering will be carried out by global ABB teams located in Australia, Finland, and Switzerland.
ABB's innovative drive systems will deliver optimal performance in modern concentrators by ensuring maximum efficiency, reliability, and operational flexibility. This technology will play a significant role in the global energy transition, aligning with the increasing demand for critical metals and the acceleration of large-scale mining projects in Australia.
Björn Jonsson, Global Business Line Manager for Mining and Materials at ABB Process Industries, stated, "ABB will bring together local manufacturing capabilities, global expertise, and proven technologies to support Eva Copper, the most significant new mining project in Queensland. Our drive systems will strengthen the copper supply chain, which will support the global energy transition."
