Valmet will supply a complete Valmet DNAe Distributed Control System (DCS) and safety systems for PEC Gliwice Sp. z o.o.'s new waste-to-energy steam unit, as part of the Green Energy Park project being built in Gliwice, Poland.
This critical automation system is designed to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the complex multi-fuel energy plant. The goals are to maximize energy recovery, provide data-driven optimization with transparent monitoring, and reduce operating costs and environmental impact.
### Project and Collaboration
The Green Energy Park is a significant investment aimed at modernizing Gliwice's heating and waste treatment infrastructure, and one of the pioneering projects in the circular economy for the city. The project is being carried out by the EPC consortium of Mostostal Zabrze Gliwickie Przedsiębiorstwo Budownictwa Przemysłowego S.A., Oschatz Power GmbH, and Przedsiębiorstwo Remontów Ulic i Mostów S.A. (PRUiM).
### The Role of Automation
Krzysztof Szaliński, President of the Management Board of PEC Gliwice, emphasized that advanced automation is critical for the efficient, safe, and reliable operation of this multi-fuel energy system. Dr. Christian Linder, Managing Director of Oschatz Power GmbH, stated that they are focusing on user-friendly automation solutions with high integration capabilities, SIL3-compliant safety architecture, and advanced analytics support.
Grzegorz Łach, Sales Manager at Valmet, stated that with this project, Valmet DNAe DCS, combined with advanced technologies, provides both technical depth and strong support to the plant.
### Green Energy Park Features
- New steam unit with a capacity of 25 MWt/4 MWe
- Grate-fired boiler and back-pressure steam turbine
- 10 MW heat pump for heat recovery from humid exhaust gases
- Use of multi-fuel materials such as non-recyclable municipal waste and treated sludge
- Annual production of 136,000 MWh of heat and 22,000 MWh of electricity
- Annual reduction of 25,000 tons in coal consumption in the city
- Annual reduction of over 43,000 tons in CO₂ emissions
### Technical Delivery Information
The delivery includes the Valmet DNAe DCS and a SIL 3 compliant safety system (SIS), which comprehensively monitor and control all process units in the waste incineration plant, from fuel feeding to flue gas treatment. The system has advanced alarm, trend monitoring, and long-term data archiving capabilities for high availability.
The equipment also covers the integration of other auxiliary systems of the consortium, commissioning support, and operator training.
