A New Era in AI-Powered Design from PTC

PTC is expanding its cloud-based design ecosystem by directly connecting language models to its programming structures. This innovation allows engineers to create reusable automation scripts. With the FeatureScript MCP Server available on the Onshape CAD and PDM platform, engineers will be able to create custom computer-aided design functions using natural language processing (NLP).

🤖 Automating Design Workflows with AI

The FeatureScript MCP Server connects coding-capable large language models (LLMs) such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini to Onshape's proprietary CAD automation language via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Now, without the need for manual code writing, users can define their desired design function with natural language inputs. The AI system will draft, test, debug, and refine the FeatureScript code until the custom tool meets the specified geometric or operational requirements.

This approach addresses the demand for scalable engineering capabilities by automating repetitive engineering workflows in industrial manufacturing and product development without requiring specialized programming knowledge. David Katzman from PTC states that this architecture provides users with the ability to develop engineering capabilities specifically tailored to an enterprise's individual products and manufacturing processes.

♻️ Reusable Engineering Assets for the Product Data Ecosystem

Capturing and operationalizing engineering expertise is a critical component of managing complex design lifecycles. By transforming proven design methods into independent, reusable CAD features, manufacturing enterprises can standardize workflows across distributed teams and projects. Since the generated code functions as a persistent FeatureScript tool, engineers can continuously apply these automated solutions.

Jeff Hojlo from IDC notes that the adoption of AI for engineering focuses on capturing and operationally utilizing technical expertise rather than creating new geometric models. By establishing a unified product data foundation, enterprises can accelerate transformation processes, manage structural complexity, and maintain strict regulatory compliance standards across supply chains.

💡 The Onshape Difference Versus Traditional Systems

Traditional CAD automation systems, such as Siemens NX Open or Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORKS API, often require knowledge of specific syntax in languages like C++, Python, or VBA. The Onshape FeatureScript MCP Server, however, directly integrates the LLM protocol into the cloud-based CAD environment. This direct protocol connection eliminates the latency and interoperability barriers often found in desktop-based CAD architectures. This method also removes the version control friction associated with distributing custom automation scripts across decentralized engineering departments.
