QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited, announced an expanded collaboration with NVIDIA at Hannover Messe. This partnership integrates QNX® OS for Safety 8.0 with the NVIDIA IGX Thor platform, enabling the development of safety-critical edge artificial intelligence (AI) systems for regulated environments such as surgical robotics, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and industrial automation.
### Unified Architecture and Mixed-Criticality Systems
This integration allows safety-critical controls and high-performance AI processing to run on the same hardware. By using QNX OS for Safety 8.0 alongside the NVIDIA IGX Thor Halos Safety Stack, engineers can unify system architectures with a mixed-criticality approach. AI-driven perception, spatial planning, and decision-making functions operate on NVIDIA's accelerated processing cores, while essential safety functions are executed in an isolated and deterministic manner within the QNX microkernel.
### Technical Reliability and Certification
In sectors such as medical technology and heavy industrial manufacturing, functional safety and reliability are mandatory parameters. The QNX microkernel prevents low-priority processes from interfering with high-priority safety tasks, thereby maintaining system integrity. This configuration is crucial in situations where system safety is paramount in software-defined machines that manage autonomous behaviors at the edge.
### Technology Transfer from Automotive to Industry
This collaboration extends the safety architecture previously established in the automotive sector with the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor developer kit to industrial and medical sectors. As a result, the deterministic and functional safety levels found in autonomous vehicles can now be applied to next-generation smart factory components and digital supply chain robots.
### Development Scalability and Early Access
The unified platform is designed to support the entire product lifecycle, from early prototyping to full production. This architecture reduces the software development burden and accelerates the time-to-market for complex AI systems. Registration for Early Access to QNX with the NVIDIA IGX Thor Developer Kit is open, offering selected customers the opportunity to develop and validate safety-critical applications in demanding edge environments.
