NEC and UrbanChain to Test Next-Gen AI Parking Service

NEC Corporation and UrbanChain will commence a joint demonstration in September 2026 to evaluate a next-generation surface parking service in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. This initiative aims to accelerate the digital transformation (DX) of parking facilities by integrating UrbanChain's Parking OS automated payment system with NEC's AI-powered image recognition technology.

Smart Integration: Prioritizing Security and Convenience

This integration is specifically designed to accurately detect passengers exiting vehicles, creating a new operational model that aims to revolutionize both facility security and user convenience.

Addressing Security and Fair Billing Issues

The project addresses growing public safety concerns, such as drivers experiencing sudden medical emergencies in parked vehicles, as well as common user issues like being charged while searching for a spot or dropping off passengers. By using the moment the driver exits the vehicle as the starting point for billing, the system prevents hasty driving decisions and ensures fairer pricing.

    Comprehensive Evaluation

The month-long verification will assess technical aspects, such as the accuracy of AI detection when passengers do not exit the vehicle for extended periods, as well as commercial considerations like optimal camera placement and the use of data for retail pedestrian traffic analysis.

A Critical Step for Smart Cities

The digital transformation of surface parking lots represents a critical step in the broader evolution of smart cities. Traditional parking management relies heavily on barriers, physical ticket machines, or ground sensors, which require significant hardware maintenance and often cause traffic congestion at entry points. By transitioning to an AI-powered, camera-based "barrier-free" architecture, operators can significantly reduce hardware expenditures and operational downtime.

    Enhanced Behavioral Telemetry

Furthermore, the ability to monitor not only vehicle entry times but also passenger exit times offers enhanced behavioral telemetry for facility managers. This detailed data allows for rapid response to emergencies, as well as precise pedestrian traffic analysis to optimize commercial tenant placement and marketing strategies for surrounding retail complexes.
