LEDs are said to last almost forever; however, many people have had to replace household "20,000-hour" bulbs within six months. In industry, when claims of a 100,000-hour operating life for 22mm LED indicators are heard, skepticism naturally arises.
In industrial applications, failure doesn't mean the light goes out completely; the real problem is lumen depreciation. In this process, the light slowly fades and ceases to be a reliable indicator. This is why the long life of an LED can be explained not just by the bulb itself, but by the performance of its driver electronics.
### Differences Between LEDs and Incandescent Bulbs
- Incandescent bulbs fail due to the fatigue of the filament, which expands and contracts with heat.
- LEDs, on the other hand, are based on semiconductor material principles and contain no moving parts.
- In actual use, temperature changes, material impurities, and voltage fluctuations limit LED lifespan.
Raw LEDs are sensitive circuits driven by current. If the voltage doubles, the diode immediately fails. Therefore, most LEDs operate with an in-circuit resistor or an integrated circuit driver appropriate for the supply voltage.
### Multi-Voltage LED Drivers
In industry, drivers that accept a wide voltage range from 20 VDC to 277 VAC are required. High-end manufacturers like c3controls use integrated circuit (IC) based current regulators. These drivers:
- Electronically reduce the input to the desired current
- Provide multi-voltage compatibility
- Reduce energy loss due to heat and factors that harm LED lifespan
### Life Tests and the L70 Standard
Manufacturers do not conduct 11-year tests; they apply accelerated aging tests. By operating LEDs at 85°C for 1000 hours, the time it takes for light output to drop to 70% (L70) is calculated.
### c3controls and Industrial Application
- c3controls provides ease of stocking and high reliability
- If many special icons or voltages are desired, other manufacturers may be preferred
- If you are looking for a maintenance-free, high-temperature resistant device, c3controls' multi-voltage electronic modules offer long-term advantages
When selecting industrial LED indicators, it is important to consider application requirements and stock management.
