Valmet has introduced Valmet IQ Virtual Sensor, a software-based solution that enables paper and board manufacturers to monitor critical product strength properties, traditionally measured in the laboratory, in real time. With this system, production facilities can receive continuous quality predictions, maintaining consistent quality while reducing fiber and starch costs, decreasing energy consumption, and increasing overall efficiency.
### Real-Time Strength Evaluation
The system uses existing plant data to predict key paper properties such as tensile and tear strength, burst, and short-span compression test (SCT) minute by minute. By continuously learning from laboratory feedback, it proactively optimizes processes, reduces waste, and prevents quality deviations, directly increasing plant profitability.
Timo Aro, Business Manager, Quality Management Systems, Valmet Automation Solutions, explains, "Operators often use high safety margins to prevent rejected batches, which increases raw material costs. With Valmet IQ Virtual Sensor, production quality is instantly understood without waiting for laboratory results. Furthermore, with the integrated 'what if' simulator, the effects of changes can be tested in advance, reducing uncertainty and lowering safety margins."
### Instant Actionable Quality Insight
Valmet IQ Virtual Sensor provides real-time quality predictions during the process without the need for additional sensors or production downtime. All calculations are performed locally; there is no cloud dependency, ensuring data security and fast feedback. Seamless integration with Valmet DNA and Valmet DNAe systems allows operators to easily monitor predicted strength values alongside other quality data. This enables operators to make faster decisions and increase production efficiency.
### Enhanced Optimization with Integrated Control
Valmet IQ Virtual Sensor is part of the Valmet IQ Quality Management Systems family, backed by over 30 years of industry experience and innovation. While it can be used independently, when combined with the Valmet IQ Quality Control System (QCS), it offers comprehensive quality management and tighter control.
Additionally, the system can be extended to closed-loop automation solutions with Valmet Advanced Process Controls (APC), elevating quality performance, process optimization, and profitability to the next level.
