The new technology has amazing capabilities, but the plant is filled with equipment from different vendors, legacy control systems, and decades-old processes. The real challenge here is bringing these components together. This issue of integration, which lies at the heart of digital transformation, makes system integrators (SIs) indispensable.

🔗 The Bridge Between Technology Investment and Business Value​


Technology alone does not create business value. Lasting value is created when technology is effectively integrated into existing systems, operations, and workflows. SIs transform technology investments into real-world applications by providing the necessary technical and operational expertise to combine technologies, systems, data, and infrastructure within the customer's environment.

According to McKinsey research, only 16% of digital transformations have successfully improved organizational performance. This shows how critical integration is. A successful digital transformation begins with selecting the right technology and effectively integrating it into the operational environment.

SIs must understand how technologies work and how operations function in practice (including dependencies, constraints, performance requirements, and established workflows). Making technology operational requires complementary roles. Customers define business goals, provide operational knowledge, and lead organizational change. Technology providers, on the other hand, offer technologies, product expertise, training, and specialized knowledge.

SIs connect these capabilities with relevant industry, application, and regional expertise to the customer's systems and operating environment. Technology providers can support SIs in two complementary ways:

  • Delivery Competency: Product knowledge, training, solution design expertise, technical support, and application resources that help SIs deliver successful customer solutions.
  • Business Competency: Opportunity development, market access, solution positioning, and sales and marketing resources that support sustainable SI growth.

📈 The Evolving Role of the System Integrator​


As digital technologies evolve, so does the role of the SI. Artificial intelligence (AI), in particular, is changing how technology is developed and implemented. AI is elevating integration to a higher level; from connecting technologies to combining industrial context, reliable data, intelligence, execution, and sustainable business value.

AI is also transforming software development and engineering work. Microsoft research shows that developers using GitHub Copilot complete a software development task 55.8% faster. However, industrial application presents a different challenge. AI can accelerate technology creation and deliver measurable operational improvements, but industrial value still depends on reliable data, operational context, solution architecture, integration, and execution in the real operating environment.

Future-ready SIs can differentiate themselves by engaging with customers earlier to identify operational challenges, define desired outcomes, build the investment justification, and develop solution roadmaps that connect design, implementation, and continuous improvement.

Choosing the right SI requires looking beyond just technical competence. Organizations should evaluate whether a potential SI offers:

  • Relevant technical and industry expertise aligned with the organization's requirements.
  • An understanding of the customer's operational environment (including existing equipment, systems, data, cybersecurity requirements, and processes).
  • The ability to connect reliable and contextualized operational data with software, analytics, and AI.
  • Solution architecture and integration capabilities that securely and consistently connect legacy and new systems.
  • Consulting-oriented capabilities that link operational priorities, expected business outcomes, solution design, and implementation.
  • Access to up-to-date technology provider expertise and resources as technologies evolve.
  • Lifecycle responsibility and support throughout design, implementation, operation, continuous improvement, and scaling.
