With the transformation in mechanical engineering, components within the control cabinet are now being moved to the field. This has led Herding Filtertechnik, a manufacturer of industrial filtration and dust extraction systems, to transition the architecture of its special systems to decentralized connection technology. The goal was to occupy less space in the control cabinet. However, this architectural change increased assembly complexity; employees now had to install sensors, actuators, and module connections directly onto the machine.
🛠️ Solution: Digital Worker Guidance
To overcome this challenge, companies combined pre-assembled hardware with digital worker guidance software. Murrelektronik's uKonn-X system creates a digital twin of the installation process using engineering data derived from circuit diagrams, mechanical designs, and bills of materials.
💡 How It Works?
- Assembly technicians record the cables and components to be installed with handheld scanners.
- The system visualizes the exact installation position and the assigned connection point on an end device.
- This digital infrastructure requires a high level of planning depth in engineering; details such as connector headers and routing paths are predefined as 3D models.
- The software architecture has an open structure, allowing for the integration of third-party parts and pneumatic components into the guided process.
📈 Operational Impact
This process-oriented installation standardizes assembly workflows and eliminates systematic sources of error such as incorrect cable lengths or missing labels. Step-by-step procedure confirmation automatically generates a digital machine record. This record forms the basis for final quality control and future maintenance work.
At an organizational level, the system stabilizes the personnel structure; the information stored in the models allows assembly tasks to be assigned to a wider range of employees without compromising system integrity. Following a pilot phase on selected assemblies, the solution is now being used for the entire machine at Herding, managing over two hundred specific installation tasks for each filtration system.
