🚀 Ease of Integration in Robotic Vision Systems

Integrating robotic vision systems in industrial automation often requires complex hardware, specialized software, and high costs. KUKA has introduced iiQKA.AI Vision to overcome these challenges. This new software package performs 2D and 3D image processing directly within the robot controller, eliminating the need for an external computer.

🧠 Edge Processing with Embedded AI

Traditional vision systems require separate computers or cloud-based solutions for computationally intensive algorithms. iiQKA.AI Vision, however, performs image processing locally within the robot controller using the KUKA AI Extension Platform, which is based on the NVIDIA Jetson Orin architecture. This embedded architecture reduces latency, eliminates network security vulnerabilities, and processes and stores all image data within the robot.

🛠️ Unified Engineering and Graphical Configuration

iiQKA.AI Vision is configured via a graphical user interface through the iiQWorks platform. Thanks to drag-and-drop programming and pre-designed application templates, even non-expert engineering teams can easily implement vision-based automation. The system offers centralized management and diagnostic monitoring, bridging the gap between engineering setup and daily production operations.

🎯 Automated Feature Extraction and Kinematic Guidance

Operating in both 2D and 3D imaging domains, iiQKA.AI Vision performs object segmentation, spatial coordinate determination, and automatic gripping point calculations. In 3D operations, it evaluates point clouds obtained from sensor data or CAD models to calculate collision-free trajectory strategies and stable gripping angles. In 2D workflows, it identifies workpieces, tracks conveyor movements, and calculates dynamic offsets to guide robot manipulators in real-time.

    🏭 Industrial Application Areas

This technology is ideal for industrial applications such as bin picking of unsorted workpieces, automated machine loading and unloading, depalletizing, precision assembly, and in-line quality control. KUKA will showcase technical demos of iiQKA.AI Vision at the NVIDIA GTC event in Berlin from October 20-22, 2026.

💡 Position in the Industry and Competition

Embedded neural network processing in robot controllers reflects an industry-wide shift towards edge-based physical AI in discrete manufacturing. Traditional vision-based robotic systems typically rely on standalone smart cameras or external IPC-based 3D vision systems. KUKA's integrated approach directly competes with established platforms like FANUC iRVision and ABB Integrated Vision.

By adopting the NVIDIA Jetson Orin system-on-module (offering 275 trillion operations per second in its 64 GB configuration), the KUKA AI Extension Platform provides sufficient tensor processing capacity within the control cabinet. This enables deep neural network segmentation and dynamic 3D grip pose estimation without the need for external computers, thereby reducing footprint, power consumption, and multi-vendor software costs in robotic cells.
