💡 New Generation Motor Starters from Phoenix Contact
Phoenix Contact has brought a breath of fresh air to its industrial automation product range! The company has launched Contactron hybrid motor starters with integrated IO-Link interface, designed to support decentralized automation architectures, and featuring IP54 and IP67 protection ratings.
⚙️ Motor Control at the Field Level is Now Easier
These innovative devices move motor control electronics from central control cabinets directly to machines or conveyor lines. This reduces wiring requirements while providing ease of installation at the field level for demanding factory automation, machine engineering, and intralogistics applications.
🛡️ Hybrid Switching Architecture and Mechanical Durability
- Long-Lasting Operation: These motor starters, which combine solid-state semiconductor electronics with electromechanical relay switching, offer a longer service life compared to traditional electromechanical contactors.
- Compact Design: The electronic control sequence limits internal heat generation, allowing for a compact enclosure footprint.
- Versatile Use: Supports direct-on-line (DOL) and reversing starter modes.
- Integrated Safety: The hardware includes integrated functional safety capabilities with parameter configuration and diagnostic reporting via IO-Link.
🌐 Decentralized Communication and Process Diagnostics
IO-Link integration provides bidirectional parameterization and status monitoring from field devices to higher-level automation networks. Positioning motor starters closer to drives in material handling and conveyor installations simplifies installation wiring and increases continuous process visibility.
🔍 Technical Details
- Current Control: Microprocessor-controlled semiconductors switch current at the sinusoidal zero-crossing point during start and stop intervals, eliminating electrical arcing and contact wear.
- Energy Efficiency: Once nominal operating speed is reached, low-resistance mechanical contacts engage, bypassing the semiconductors and preventing continuous thermal dissipation in the field enclosure.
- Easy Connection: Standard M12 circular power and signal connectors are used for IP67 units.
- Comprehensive Reporting: Operational metrics such as phase currents, thermal load models, and switching cycle totals are reported cyclically via IO-Link.
- High Safety: Safety-integrated variants achieve Safe Torque Off (STO) ratings up to SIL 3 and PL e without auxiliary contactors.
