🌍 AI Factories in Europe Are Transforming

The escalating computational demands of generative AI and foundational models are placing significant strain on global energy grids and water resources. Traditional large-scale facilities rely on evaporative cooling towers to dissipate heat from intense computing arrays, consuming millions of liters of potable water daily. To address these issues, NVIDIA is deploying the DSX AI Factory Platform with its partners across Europe.

💧 Closed-Loop Cooling Approaches Zero Water Consumption

One of the core pillars of the NVIDIA DSX platform is to eliminate evaporative water consumption. While traditional cooling towers dissipate heat through continuous water evaporation, DSX reference designs transition facilities to closed-loop liquid cooling and external dry cooler radiators. Designed for the NVIDIA Vera Rubin architecture, this system supports 100% direct-to-chip liquid cooling, with facility cooling water supply temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees Celsius.

This high-temperature threshold allows external dry coolers to transfer heat directly to ambient air without needing evaporative phase changes, bringing facility cooling water consumption close to zero. Based on foundational modeling, a 2-gigawatt deployment using the DSX architecture eliminates up to 54 million liters of water consumption per day compared to traditional cooling tower configurations. This is equivalent to the daily municipal water usage of 180,000 households.

⚡ Dynamic Power Optimization and Grid-Responsive Workload Coordination

To maximize throughput within tight power allocations, the platform includes DSX MaxLPS for dynamic power budgeting and DSX Flex for bidirectional grid interaction:

  • DSX MaxLPS: Instead of maintaining static worst-case power margins across compute nodes, the software dynamically allocates power within provided thresholds, enabling operators to produce equivalent token output with up to 30% less electrical power.
  • DSX Flex: This telemetry module coordinates cluster consumption with grid dispatch needs, spot electricity prices, and demand response signals. The system achieves up to 40% power draw reduction during simulated grid stress events while sustaining critical, non-deferrable compute tasks.

🛠️ Simulation-Ready Digital Twins and Modular Infrastructure Software

To accelerate the facility commissioning process, the platform integrates simulation tools with modular infrastructure management software. Through DSX Sim and the newly launched SimReady Central Library, engineering teams can evaluate verified digital assets from partners like Vertiv and PTC to simulate structural layout, power distribution, fluid dynamics, and acoustic profiles before construction begins.

At the operating system layer, NVIDIA introduced three modular, open-source DSX OS components in developer preview to automate runtime environments:

  • NVIDIA Config Manager: Automates multi-layer AI factory network topologies.
  • NVIDIA Rack Management Service: Consolidates rack-level inventory tracking, power routing, firmware flashing, and key telemetry.
  • NVIDIA Cluster Readiness Engine: Executes distributed synthetic workloads to validate node-level hardware and interconnect fabrics, isolating pre-production faults.

🤝 Cross-Ecosystem Industrial Integration

This expansion in Europe is supported by coordinated engineering deployments across industrial technology providers:

  • Facility Infrastructure: Schneider Electric is delivering power and liquid cooling designs for Vera Rubin infrastructure, along with AVEVA lifecycle digital twins.
  • Pre-Engineered Power and Cooling: Trane Technologies and Eaton have collaborated on integrated grid-to-chip designs, combining Eaton Beam power platforms with Trane Continuum cooling systems.
  • Qualified Hardware: Verified equipment under the NVIDIA DSX Ready program includes Trane Technologies LiquidStack GigaModular and Vertiv 2.3-megawatt CoolChip chiller distribution units, as well as Hitachi Energy battery energy storage systems.
