đź’ˇ A New Era in Automated Testing: PXI Instruments from Emerson

In high-reliability industries such as aerospace and defense, transportation, semiconductor manufacturing, and scientific research, engineering and validation teams are under increasing pressure to accelerate time-to-market and manage increasingly complex mixed-signal devices. Traditionally, configuring high-channel-count automated test environments presented significant financial and operational barriers. However, Emerson has expanded the National Instruments (NI) PXI portfolio with new, cost-effective test hardware to overcome these challenges.

    đź’° Cost-Effective Modular PXIe Instruments

Emerson has expanded the NI PXI portfolio to lower the barrier to entry for automated measurement architectures. These new products include the NI PXIe-4086 digital multimeter (DMM) and expanded configurations of the NI PXIe-5160 and NI PXIe-5162 high-speed oscilloscopes.

    • NI PXIe-4086 DMM: An entry-level instrument for high-accuracy validation, this DMM offers 6½ digits of resolution and 35 ppm basic accuracy. It can perform multi-parameter measurements such as AC/DC voltage and current, two- and four-wire resistance, diode checks, and frequency measurements.
    • NI PXIe-5160 and PXIe-5162 Oscilloscopes: These new oscilloscope variants provide flexible signal acquisition at up to 1.5 GHz bandwidth in two- and four-channel modular configurations. With 1 GB of onboard memory, these digitizers offer 10-bit vertical resolution to maintain signal integrity while capturing high-frequency pulses and fast transient edges.

🤖 AI-Powered Setup and Automated Test Scenarios

The hardware additions integrate directly into Emerson’s NI software ecosystem. With updated support in NI InstrumentStudio, engineers can perform code-free configuration, multi-instrument interactive visualization, and hardware setup within a single, unified software environment.

To further accelerate test development, the platform includes NI Nigel AI, an AI assistant specifically designed for automated test workflows. NI Nigel helps engineers generate instrument control sequences, interpret complex measurement topologies, and accelerate debugging routines across multi-instrument setups. David Hall, Vice President of NI Product Marketing for Emerson’s Test & Measurement business unit, states that combining accessible PXI instrumentation with AI-powered software allows engineering teams to spend less time designing test hardware and more time focusing on core product validation.

⚙️ Technical Details and Competitive Analysis

In automated test and measurement architectures governed by PXI Systems Alliance (PXISA) specifications, the high-speed PXI Express backplane is critical for high-throughput mixed-signal tests. The PXI platform integrates a 100 MHz differential system clock, differential star triggers, and localized trigger buses to coordinate nanosecond-level time synchronization between discrete digitizers, multimeters, and matrix switch modules without requiring external coaxial chassis-to-chassis cabling.

Emerson’s NI portfolio directly competes with PXI and modular hardware offerings from rivals such as Keysight Technologies, Rohde & Schwarz, Pickering Interfaces, and Marvin Test Solutions. Emerson’s NI PXIe-4086 and the updated PXIe-5160 series target mid-level functional test and production validation cells. By embedding generative and assistive AI models directly into the instrument software stack via NI Nigel, Emerson addresses developer shortages and code maintenance bottlenecks, positioning the NI PXI platform as an accessible, scalable automated test architecture for enterprise production facilities.
