Universal Robots Unveils Groundbreaking Gen 7 Platform at IMTS 2026!
Universal Robots (UR), the leading manufacturer of industrial collaborative robots, introduced its seventh-generation robotic platform, Gen 7, at the IMTS conference in Chicago. This new platform opens the door to a new era in robotic automation.
PolyScope X and Redesigned Hardware
Gen 7 represents a unified system upgrade powered by the PolyScope X robot operating system. It stands out with a completely redesigned control box, teach pendant, and tool flange.
Jean-Pierre Hathout, President of Teradyne Robotics Group, emphasized that Gen 7 simplifies integration and significantly expands application capabilities, stating, "Robots in the age of AI should be advanced, not complex."
Gen 7's Groundbreaking Features:
- New g-Series Robot Arms: The UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300, and UR18g-950 models come with AI-ready tool flanges. These flanges directly provide the vision and sensing capabilities necessary for real-time operation of AI models.
- Built-in Force-Torque Sensing: This feature, which gives robots a sense of touch, is critical for physical AI applications such as delicate manipulation and force-sensitive assembly tasks.
- CB7 Core Controllers: Offering 40% more processing power and a 30% smaller footprint than previous generations, these controllers provide multi-network communication for modern automation and physical AI architectures.
- PolyScope X Operating System: Equipped with modern programming tools, ISO 10218-1 safety functionality, and cybersecurity compliance, PolyScope X enables the development of edge AI applications through open APIs and ROS2 communication.
- TP7 Core Teach Pendant: 20% lighter, with multiple grip positions, configurable smart buttons, and a full HD display, ensuring operator comfort even during long shifts.
- SP7 Smart Panel Tool Flange Interface: This panel offers faster teaching and programming directly at the tool flange, with safety-compliant free-drive functionality and configurable input buttons, reducing setup time.
New Standards in Safety and Cybersecurity
Gen 7 offers advanced and collaborative safety functions certified to PLd, Category 3 (ISO 13849-1). All g-Series robots are TÜV certified, and Teradyne Robotics holds IEC 62443-4-1 ML3 cybersecurity certification.
Showcasing the Physical AI Ecosystem
At IMTS, Gen 7 was showcased alongside new developments from over 20 ecosystem partners, including Cognex, Schunk, Magswitch, Smooth Robotics, Psyonic, Robotiq, and Inbolt.
Rudy Cohen, CEO of Inbolt, stated, "Universal Robots and Inbolt share the belief that automation should be easily implementable and livable. With Gen 7 and PolyScope X, Inbolt's vision now runs directly on the UR controller. No external vision computer or additional cabling. Manufacturers can position parts without jigs or fixtures and go into production in hours instead of weeks.
