✨ A Sensor Revolutionizing Machine Vision

OMNIVISION has introduced the OG05D, a 5-megapixel global shutter CMOS image sensor that brings a breath of fresh air to the world of industrial automation. This sensor is specifically designed for machine vision, humanoid robots, and barcode scanning systems. Thanks to its high-speed imaging and integrated processing capabilities, it optimizes data collection and optical navigation for autonomous systems in dynamic factory environments.

    ⚙️ Architecture and Processing Power

    • The OG05D utilizes a stacked back-illuminated (BSI) architecture combined with a 2.2-micron global shutter pixel. This ensures all pixels are exposed simultaneously, eliminating distortions in moving scenes.
    • Capable of reaching up to 146 frames per second (fps) in linear mode, this sensor increases data acquisition speed by 143% compared to previous generation 5-megapixel models.
    • Thanks to its dual conversion gain (DCG) hardware, it supports 60 fps in single-exposure high dynamic range (HDR) combinations, minimizing motion blur in both bright and shadowed areas.

    💡 Near-Infrared Efficiency and Integration

    • To support autonomous navigation in low-light conditions, the sensor benefits from special near-infrared (NIR) enhancements. This provides a quantum efficiency (QE) of over 55% at 850 nm and over 35% at 940 nm.
    • The 5-megapixel array fits into a 1/2.5-inch optical format in a 6.6 x 5.3 millimeter package. This means a 30% smaller physical size and 30% lower power consumption compared to previous versions. These features facilitate the integration of embedded AI cameras while extending the operating times of battery-powered robotic systems.

    🗓️ Availability and Industrial Deployment

This unit, offering pixels capable of HDR exceeding 70dB, supports monochrome, RGB, and RGB-IR configurations for stringent quality control networks. Engineering validation samples of the OG05D are currently available, with mass production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. The hardware will be showcased at the VISION Fair in Stuttgart, Germany, from October 6-8, 2026.

    🔍 Technical Details and Competition

The OG05D sets a new dimension standard in the 5-megapixel industrial image sensor market with its 2.2-micron global shutter pixel. It directly competes with rivals such as the Sony Pregius S series (e.g., IMX568) and the Gpixel GMAX3405. While Sony's 2.74-micron pixel size and Gpixel's 3.4-micron pixel require larger optical formats, OMNIVISION's 2.2-micron pixel fits the 5-megapixel array into a smaller 1/2.5-inch sensor format. This size reduction allows hardware engineers to use smaller, lighter, and more cost-effective C-mount or M12 lenses. Furthermore, while the typical NIR quantum efficiency of standard silicon global shutter sensors at 850 nm is around 33%, OMNIVISION's architecture increases this parameter to over 55%, providing better target illumination with less active infrared LED power.
