Next-Generation Autonomous Solutions from MicroVision and FieldAI
MicroVision, Inc. and FieldAI are combining lidar sensor hardware with autonomy software to enhance navigation and mapping capabilities for uncrewed ground and aerial vehicles. This collaboration focuses on the need to maintain precise situational awareness, especially in challenging physical environments.
System Architecture and Technological Integration
The technical integration combines MicroVision's IRIS long-range and MOVIA short-range lidar sensors with FieldAI's robotic control systems. While MicroVision sensors capture the physical geometry of the environment, FieldAI translates this point cloud data into actionable navigation and mapping commands.
Application Areas and Use Cases
- Aerial Vehicles: The MOVIA Air Plus sensor is integrated into the Robinson Unmanned Spirit drone platform, providing real-time, color 3D lidar mapping. The acquired data is directly streamed to the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) system, offering operators immediate environmental topography.
- Ground Vehicles: IRIS long-range sensors are mounted on autonomous ground vehicles to support obstacle detection at high speeds and over long distances, thereby increasing process stability and operational safety.
Testing and Deployment Processes
FieldAI engineers have successfully completed initial tests of the perception technologies on both ground and aerial platforms. Following these successful evaluations, FieldAI procured additional MOVIA sensors to expand testing in federal and commercial robotics programs. The current phase focuses on validating the sensors' ability to sustain continuous mission execution and digital infrastructure integration during complex route navigation.
Strategic Assessment
Shehryar Khattak, CTO of FieldAI, stated that they are expanding their evaluation efforts to identify opportunities for broader adoption of MicroVision's perception solutions. Glen DeVos, CEO of MicroVision, emphasized that their company's portfolio provides the flexibility and performance required to support next-generation robotic systems.
