The International Society of Automation (ISA) and the Operational Technology Cybersecurity Coalition (OTCC) have entered into a significant partnership to strengthen operational technology (OT) cybersecurity in critical infrastructures.
The two organizations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at raising awareness about OT cybersecurity risks and solutions, exploring strategic issues of common interest, and facilitating technical interaction among members.
The primary goal of this collaboration is to promote better implementation and recognition of fundamental cybersecurity standards such as ISA/IEC 62443.
ISA CEO Claire Fallon stated, "Protecting critical infrastructure requires continuous collaboration, practical guidance, and a shared commitment to standards-based cybersecurity. This partnership establishes an important framework that will help ISA and OTCC advance core OT cybersecurity practices."
The OTCC recently issued a statement advocating for a single, horizontal standard for OT cybersecurity, rather than numerous sector-specific standards. This statement proposes the recognition of ISA/IEC 62443 as the global OT security standard.
According to the statement, ISA/IEC 62443 stands out as an established framework specifically designed to meet the requirements of OT. The OTCC notes that a single, interoperable OT cybersecurity standard like ISA/IEC 62443 can reduce the burden of complying with redundant standards.
Tatyana Bolton, Executive Director of OTCC, commented, "ISA and OTCC approach OT cybersecurity from different angles; ISA through standards that define good practices, and OTCC through the companies that implement them. Bringing these perspectives together ensures that standards move from paper to practice, and we look forward to working with ISA to make this happen.
