QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited, expanded its collaboration with NVIDIA at the Hannover Messe fair by integrating QNX® OS for Safety 8.0 with the NVIDIA IGX Thor platform. This development enables the creation of safety-critical edge AI systems in regulated environments such as surgical robotics, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and industrial automation.

    ### Unified Architecture and Mixed-Criticality Systems

This integration addresses the need to host safety-critical control and high-performance AI workloads on a single hardware platform. The combination of NVIDIA IGX Thor Halos Safety Stack with QNX OS for Safety 8.0 unifies system architectures with a mixed-criticality approach. While AI-based sensing, spatial planning, and decision-making functions run on NVIDIA's accelerated processing cores, vital safety functions remain isolated and deterministic within the QNX microkernel.

    ### Technical Reliability and Certification

Functional safety is a prerequisite in medical technology and heavy industry. This platform supports the stringent certification processes required for regulated devices. The QNX microkernel architecture prevents low-priority processes from interfering with high-priority safety tasks, thereby maintaining system integrity. This isolation is critical in software-defined machines where autonomous behavior is managed at the edge.

    ### Technology Transfer from Automotive to Industry

This collaboration extends the proven safety architecture established in the automotive sector with the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor development kit to the industrial and medical fields. Thus, the determinism and functional safety standards from autonomous vehicles are transferred to smart factory components and digital supply chain robots.

    ### Development Scalability and Early Access

The platform is designed to support the entire product lifecycle, from early prototype stages to full-scale production. Consistency in the software architecture shortens the development time for complex AI systems. Early access registration for QNX with the NVIDIA IGX Thor Developer Kit has opened; select customers will have access to technical tools to develop and validate their safety-critical applications.
