HMS Networks has announced a new CAN-FD-to-Ethernet Gateway product called Ixxat CAN@net Basic, designed to meet the increasing demand for simple, scalable, and cost-effective connectivity in industrial and automotive applications.

In modern applications, seamless communication between distributed CAN networks and Ethernet-based systems is becoming increasingly important. However, engineers often have to choose between performance, latency, and system cost. Existing solutions either involve unnecessary complexity or are insufficient to meet actual CAN FD needs. The CAN@net Basic addresses these challenges by focusing on efficient data exchange, low latency, and affordability.

    ### Solutions to Engineering Challenges

    Balancing Latency and Inconsistency:
In many CAN-to-Ethernet systems, sending an Ethernet frame for every CAN message causes excessive interruptions, leading to high jitter and inconsistent performance. Batching data reduces jitter but increases latency. The CAN@net Basic uses UDP/IP communication to reduce protocol overhead and minimize interrupt load, thereby providing low latency and controlled jitter, making it suitable for time-sensitive applications.

    Scaling Distributed Systems:
In systems where numerous devices exchange CAN FD data, the physical CAN bus limits (length and number of nodes) create bottlenecks. The CAN@net Basic offers flexible network expansion over Ethernet, making it possible to overcome the limitations of classic CAN topologies.

    Reducing Costs:
Many users only utilize a fraction of advanced gateway functions but are forced to pay high costs for full-featured products. The CAN@net Basic is designed to offer essential functions economically, maintaining industrial performance and quality, at a price of 270 Euros.
