🚀 Bosch Rexroth Integrates Agentic AI into ctrlX AUTOMATION Platform!
Bosch Rexroth has taken a significant step that will shape the future of industrial automation. The company announced the integration of Agentic AI into its ctrlX AUTOMATION platform. This innovative approach aims to automate engineering tasks, configure I/O systems, and manage automation environments.
🧠 iXi: The New Brain of Automation
"iXi," the central AI agent integrated into the platform, will be able to independently execute configuration and programming tasks throughout the automation lifecycle by accessing automation data, engineering tools, and system functions. Unlike traditional AI assistants, iXi can translate user input into action, automatically configuring system requirements.
Engineers will now be able to provide iXi with high-level system specifications (e.g., an installation sketch and natural language description) instead of manually defining axes, configuring kinematics, or writing PLC programs. iXi will use this information to determine the necessary steps, define kinematics, and generate IEC 61131-3 code directly within the engineering environment.
🔒 Secure Communication: Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Bosch Rexroth uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to ensure secure and standardized interaction between the AI agent and the automation infrastructure. MCP creates an encrypted and authenticated communication layer that connects Large Language Models (LLMs) with the ctrlX OS operating system, engineering tools like ctrlX PLC Engineering, and the ctrlX Data Layer. This architecture ensures that the agent operates only within the authenticated user's permissions, preventing unauthorized access.
🛠️ One Agent, Multiple Capabilities: Scalable Ecosystem
The iXi agent operates on the principle of "one agent, multiple capabilities." Instead of deploying separate AI models for each task, the central agent queries specialized capability modules required for specific objectives. This modular capability architecture is dynamically scalable; as new applications or third-party tools are added to the ctrlX ecosystem, they can inject their own specialized capabilities, expanding the agent's operational abilities.
☁️ Local Inference and Hardware Development
The ctrlX AUTOMATION platform offers an open architecture for AI model selection and inference location. Bosch Rexroth is collaborating with AMD to develop a dedicated hardware platform for localized AI execution. This local inference capability will allow industrial operators to process sensitive engineering and machine telemetry data entirely on-premises, eliminating the latency and data sovereignty concerns associated with cloud-dependent AI processing.
The iXi agent is currently in beta testing, with a broader market release planned for early 2027.
💡 Competition and Future Vision
Bosch Rexroth's integration represents a shift in industrial control platforms from code completion tools (like GitHub Copilot) to autonomous configuration engines. The ctrlX AUTOMATION platform competes in this emerging field with rivals such as Siemens' Industrial Edge ecosystem and Beckhoff's TwinCAT platform. Notably, the use of the open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP) provides a flexible architecture, allowing the ctrlX platform to dynamically retrieve context from third-party applications and engineering files. The collaboration with AMD addresses data privacy concerns, removing a significant barrier to AI adoption in manufacturing.
