✨ End Optical Stability Issues in Long-Range Industrial Applications!

Optical distance sensing in factory automation often encounters operational limitations when target materials vary between light, dark, or reflective surfaces, or present perpendicular angles to the beam axis. In areas such as automated handling, packaging lines, and metal processing, inconsistent optical reflection frequently leads to measurement deviations or signal interruptions. This forces businesses to use expensive external reflectors or complex mechanical improvements. SensoPart solves this stability problem by expanding its DTECT Distance series with FT 55 time-of-flight (ToF) laser sensors. The use of time-of-flight operating principles in compact sensor formats eliminates this issue by making distance measurement independent of target color and surface reflection.

💡 Operating Principle and Measurement Stability

The operational challenge in long-range position tracking is to ensure signal continuity without the need for target-mounted reflectors. Traditional diffuse triangulation sensors struggle over long distances due to geometric constraints and sensitivity to surface properties. The SensoPart FT 55 series meets this requirement by implementing direct time-of-flight (ToF) measurement. In a ToF architecture, the device emits pulsed laser light and calculates the time between light emission and its reflection back from the target to the internal receiver photodiode. Since distance determination is based strictly on the speed of light, not the triangulation angle, measurement accuracy remains constant even if targets are matte black, high-contrast, or oriented at varying angles.

Operating as direct scan sensors without external reflector arrays, these units cover operating ranges from close proximity up to 15 meters. This non-contact design simplifies mechanical design engineering and prevents alignment maintenance issues caused by machine vibration or operational wear. Safe integration is supported through an integrated Class 1 laser source, which eliminates the need for external laser guarding, protective enclosures, or specialized safety interlocks during continuous operation.

⚙️ Industrial Integration and Signal Architecture

Continuous loop control, coil unwinding, and staging logistics require adaptive interface architectures to accommodate heterogeneous controller environments. The FT 55 series meets these integration requirements through various output configurations:

    • FT 55-RLAP-15-PNSIL-L5 Model: Offers an analog current output, one digital switching output, and an auxiliary control input for analog process monitoring.
    • FT 55-RLAP-15-PNSUL-L5 Model: Provides an analog voltage output along with a digital switching output and control input.
    • FT 55-RLHP-15-2PNSL-L5 Model: Is specifically configured for presence detection tasks with two independently parameterizable switching outputs and one digital input.

All variants include digital communication compliant with the IO-Link 1.1.4 standard. In automated production networks, this digital protocol allows for remote parameter assignment, continuous transmission of absolute distance values, and direct forwarding of extended diagnostic telemetry to higher-level programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Field diagnostics via IO-Link reduce operational troubleshooting and facilitate sensor replacement by allowing automatic parameter re-upload without the need for manual teach-in.

🎯 Target Application Scenarios and Process Benefits

The combination of long operating range and surface tolerance makes the FT 55 platform applicable in diverse factory production workflows:

    • Coil Unwinding and Web Tensioning: In metal stamping and converting equipment, continuous coil diameter monitoring requires smooth analog feedback across wide measurement envelopes. The sensor provides direct readings against varying metal reflectivity or irregular outer windings, enabling closed-loop motor acceleration adjustments that maintain continuous feeds.
    • Sag and Loop Control: In automated wire, sheet metal, or textile handling, maintaining material accumulation loops between stations prevents mechanical stress. The 15-meter range allows for positioning away from moving mechanical equipment while ensuring reliable signal tracking.
    • Part Staging and Presence Detection: Automated storage and palletizing systems often manage mixed batch packaging. The dual-switching variant allows for independent detection thresholds, verifying both load presence and critical gaps on high-bay conveyors.

    🔍 Additional Information

Laser distance sensing in the standard 50 x 50 mm compact housing class represents a vital segment in industrial automation. Historically, achieving operating distances beyond 10 meters without reflectors required larger case formats (such as standard block or cylindrical designs exceeding 80-100 mm in depth). In industrial logistics and machine building, compact optical sensors typically provide measurement ranges between 0.05 m and 10 m, and 15 m direct scan capabilities within this housing envelope represent the upper limit for diffuse time-of-flight devices.

Compliance with the IO-Link 1.1.4 communication profile aligns the device with IEC 61131-9 standards and meets common Industry 4.0 interoperability requirements set by European machinery directives and smart manufacturing consortiums. In comparisons with comparable compact diffuse laser distance sensors (such as Sick DT50/DS50 or Pepperl+Fuchs VD50 series), device selection focuses on maximum range without reflectors, ambient light suppression, and physical mounting footprints. The inclusion of Class 1 laser diodes according to IEC/EN 60825-1 ensures personnel safety compliance in accessible production lines without the need for dedicated laser safety officers.
