🚁 Rapid Production, Strong Defense!
The U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense put on a remarkable display at the International Manufacturing Technology Show 2026 (IMTS). Quadcopter drones produced and flown live, along with the 3.3-meter Aires Tide test flight vehicle, demonstrated how critical advanced manufacturing technologies are for the defense industry.

🔬 Full-Scale Production Cell from ORNL
A full-scale production cell developed by the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) was featured in this demonstration, exhibited at the AMT Emerging Technology Center (ETC). This cell, combining automation with subtractive and additive manufacturing, produced quadcopter bodies and performed their flights in a secure area.
💡 Genesis Mission and Artificial Intelligence
Aires Tide is one of the first tangible results of DOE's Genesis Mission, which uses artificial intelligence and advanced computing to accelerate scientific discoveries and national security solutions. This project, led by Sandia National Laboratories, proves the power of AI, advanced computing, and additive manufacturing in rapidly designing and delivering solutions for national security. This significantly reduces development time and costs.
🌍 Strengthening the Industrial Base
Douglas K. Woods, President of AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology, emphasized how the ETC can strengthen the U.S. industrial base using new technologies and innovative thinking. Woods stated that the technologies needed for national defense are the same technologies that will make domestic manufacturing more efficient and competitive.
