Renesas Redefines Industrial Automation

Renesas Electronics has launched its flagship 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) RX74M and RX74N, bringing a fresh perspective to the world of industrial automation. Manufactured using a 22-nanometer (nm) process and incorporating embedded Magnetoresistive RAM (MRAM) technology, these chips stand out with processing frequencies up to 600 MHz.

Target-Oriented Design: RX74M and RX74N

  • RX74M: Specifically targets factory automation equipment such as AC drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and robots.
  • RX74N: Optimized for smart meters and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems.

Offering twice the performance of the previous generation, these MCUs aim to address the increasing complexity of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks.

Network Convergence and Real-Time Processing

At the heart of these MCUs is the RXv3e processor, supported by 1 MB MRAM, 256 KB of tightly coupled TCM memory (zero wait state), and 1.5 MB SRAM. MRAM, unlike traditional flash memory, allows data to be written without requiring a prior erase operation, significantly reducing programming times and facilitating workloads subject to frequent interruptions.

The RX74M integrates an EtherCAT slave controller, a TSN-compliant (Time-Sensitive Networking) Gigabit Ethernet switch, and a CAN FD interface on a single chip to simplify control system architecture. This integration eliminates the need for external components to simultaneously support PROFINET, EtherNet/IP DLR, and deterministic communications.

Hardware Cybersecurity and Post-Quantum Readiness

Facing global demands such as the European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), Renesas has strengthened the security foundations of its chips. The MCUs integrate ProtectZone technology, which physically and logically isolates secure and non-secure regions within the processor. Furthermore, the new version of the Renesas Secure IP (RSIP) cryptographic engine has been expanded to support hash algorithms and authenticated encryption. This architecture is designed to support next-generation security requirements, including hardware acceleration for post-quantum cryptography (PQC), to counter future IT threats.

Challenges and Advantages of 22 Nanometer MRAM

In the semiconductor industry, embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) integration becomes a major challenge below the 28nm technology node. While traditional embedded flash memory (eFlash) faces physical miniaturization limits, MRAM overcomes this problem by storing data via magnetic states instead of electrical charges. This not only crosses the 22nm barrier with excellent energy efficiency but also offers virtually unlimited write endurance and access times similar to SRAM. For industrial PLCs and robot controllers, the ability to record sensor data and error logs in real-time (data logging), without the block erase latency inherent to Flash, is critical for ensuring deterministic kinematic control and instant cycle recovery after a power outage.
