Digitally Integrated Drive Technologies from Nabtesco

Nabtesco offers digitally integrated gear mechanisms and compact actuators designed to enhance condition monitoring and spatial efficiency within the digital supply chain. These next-generation connected drive technologies include fourth-generation digital wave gears and integrated cycloidal mechanisms for robotics and industrial automation applications. The aim is to provide precise motion control and embedded diagnostics without expanding the existing hardware footprint.

    Drive Technology in Connected Automation

The transition to interconnected automation necessitates drive technologies capable of capturing and transmitting operational data in real time. Nabtesco will showcase its new hardware to meet this need at the SPS exhibition in Nuremberg from November 24-26, 2026. Through collaborations with component manufacturers such as ALVA, FLUX, and adcos, the updated product lines integrate sensor intelligence directly into mechanical transmission systems, offering proactive maintenance architectures and advanced control mechanisms.

Condition Monitoring with Digital Wave Gears

The fourth-generation digital wave gear houses sensor technology and data analysis hardware within standard installation dimensions. This enables continuous condition monitoring, load evaluation, and lifetime tracking. The updated version supports integrated position measurement and digital communication via the BiSS-C protocol. These features, combined with a dedicated parametrization and analysis tool, provide operators with higher control accuracy and greater transparency regarding equipment health, simplifying the commissioning process in complex automation environments.

Compact Drive Integration with Super Short Actuators

Designed to meet the demand for higher power density in confined spaces, the new Super Short Actuator functions as a plug-and-play unit combining a gearbox, motor, bearings, and an encoder. Utilizing ALVA's FiberPrinting technology-produced GearTorq frameless motor and a wave gear, this assembly achieves approximately 30% shorter axial length and lower overall weight compared to similar standard actuators. When paired with a customized control system from adcos, this architecture significantly reduces system integration effort for spatial constraints, such as robotic joint applications.

High-Precision Positioning in Harsh Industrial Environments

For heavy-duty applications, the RDS-C Link combines existing RDS-C series hollow shaft gearboxes, which use parallel-axis drive, with an inductive FLUX encoder. This encoder measures absolute position directly on the output shaft, ensuring high positioning accuracy even under severe mechanical loads. Since the measurement relies on inductive principles rather than optical sensors, the system maintains its reliability in harsh environments exposed to dust, contamination, and condensation, making it highly suitable for heavy industry and processing environments.

    Additional Information

In the precision gearing and industrial robotics market, integrated actuators and sensor-equipped drives are compared with established solutions like the Harmonic Drive FHA-C mini series or Sumitomo Drive Technologies' Fine Cyclo units. The integration of the BiSS-C open-source protocol in fourth-generation wave gears aligns with industry standards for high-speed, high-resolution absolute encoder communication, offering an alternative to proprietary protocols such as HEIDENHAIN's EnDat. Furthermore, the 30% reduction in axial length for the Super Short Actuator positions it competitively against conventional integrated servomotors, which often require the stacking of standard frameless motors and separate gear components, thereby increasing the overall footprint in multi-axis robotic assemblies.
