The heart of industrial transformation beat in Detroit! Siemens Digital Industries Software's annual event, Realize LIVE Americas 2026, brought together industry leaders, and we, Smart Industry and IndustryWeek, were there to witness this important gathering. We had the opportunity to closely examine Siemens' latest products and its vision for industrial artificial intelligence (AI).

    πŸ€– Next-Generation Software: Intelligence Center X

Siemens introduced a remarkable innovation at the event: Intelligence Center X. This software aims to redefine factory workflows by using "agentic AI virtual workers" that operate alongside human employees. Expected to increase efficiency, especially in high-volume and repetitive tasks, this product is the newest addition to Siemens' flagship Xcelerator software portfolio.

🀝 Strategic Partnership: Siemens and HighByte

To strengthen its AI ecosystem, Siemens forged a strategic partnership with another software giant, HighByte. This collaboration will enable customers to combine industrial data from both information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) sources to develop AI models, agents, and applications.

    • []HighByte Intelligence Hub: This industrial data operations software, designed for data modeling, orchestration, and governance, will be offered as an application on the Siemens Industrial Edge Marketplace.

      [
]This integration will allow customers to easily scale their industrial data sets.
Tony Hemmelgarn, President and CEO of Siemens Digital Industries Software, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, "When AI is combined with real business processes and enterprise data, it creates a scalable and measurable impact."

🧠 Leadership Lessons: Three Rules for Success in Digital Transformation

In addition to product launches and partnership announcements, Dennis Scimeca from IndustryWeek and Smart Industry had an engaging conversation with Tony Hemmelgarn. Drawing from his experience in the manufacturing software industry, Hemmelgarn shared three important lessons to guide leaders in digital transformation:

    1. 🎯 Be Close to the Problem

According to Hemmelgarn, the main reason for project delays or failures is that management is not close enough to the problems. "Management has to make tough decisions about how to operate as an organization and not let teams run wild," he says. Successful implementations occur where management is involved in the process and carries the flag.

Important Note: Don't try to develop your own software! Hemmelgarn emphasizes the importance of using off-the-shelf solutions, stating, "Nobody makes their own CAD tools anymore. Why? Because you can't stay competitive."

    2. πŸ‘₯ People and Processes Matter, Not Just Technology

Hemmelgarn states that while technology is certainly important, it is people and processes that truly make the difference. For example, when considering 3D printing (additive manufacturing) technology, he emphasizes the need to optimize the design process to benefit from the advantages of this technology, rather than just 3D printing a part. "You have to change your design process," he says.

He also points out the difficulties that come with over-customizing software. Customization is both costly and makes updates difficult. He warns, "You have to be very careful when you start to think you're very special."

    πŸ“ˆ Looking Ahead

Siemens' new software and partnership initiatives provide important clues about the future of industrial AI. Leaders taking an active role in digital transformation, choosing the right technologies, and ensuring human-process alignment will be key to achieving success in this new era.
