💡 New Era in Industrial Automation: Decentralized Power Distribution 💡

In industrial manufacturing, conveyor systems, and process automation, traditional power distribution relies on centralized control cabinets requiring long cable runs. This leads to voltage drops, wiring complexity, and the need for climate-controlled cabinet space. To overcome these limitations, machine builders are increasingly adopting decentralized automation architectures that move power conversion directly to the machine frame or transport system.

💪 LÜTZE DFPS Series: Robust Solutions for the Field 💪

The LÜTZE DFPS series addresses these design challenges by providing decentralized power conversion in a compact enclosure measuring 177 x 192.2 x 59.6 mm, with an IP67 degree of protection. Designed for field use without the need for an auxiliary protective enclosure, these units are resistant to dust, moisture, and water jets typical of industrial factory environments. The series consists of two 720 W models:

    • 24 V version (DFPS3-720-24-00): Provides up to 30 A of power.
    • 48 V version (DFPS3-720-48-00): Provides up to 15 A of power.

High conversion efficiencies of up to 96.7% in the 24 V unit and 96.8% in the 48 V model minimize thermal losses within the sealed enclosure and enable passive heat dissipation. Operational derating for the units begins at an ambient temperature of +45 °C.

âš¡ Wide Input Range and Power Reserves âš¡

To ensure compatibility across global three-phase distribution networks, the devices feature a wide three-phase AC input from 320 to 600 V and a DC input capability from 425 to 800 V. Active inrush current limiting prevents tripping of the upstream circuit breaker during initial power-up, while an active power factor correction (PFC) stage achieves a power factor greater than 0.9 to comply with harmonic grid standards.

Dynamic industrial loads such as servo drives, solenoid valves, and motor starters require brief peak currents during startup. DFPS power supplies include an integrated PowerBoost function capable of supplying 150% of nominal capacity, or 1,080 W, for up to five seconds. This reserve capacity allows system designers to size power supplies based on continuous nominal consumption rather than for transient peak loads.

🔌 Easy Integration and System Monitoring 🔌

Electrical connection is accomplished via standard M12 connectors, providing vibration-resistant connections suitable for direct mechanical mounting to production lines, robot cells, and material handling systems. The secondary circuit is configured as a Protective Extra Low Voltage (PELV) output, with the negative terminal connected to protective earth (PE) to meet international electrical safety standards.

For system diagnostics, an integrated DC-OK relay contact reports the operational status of the secondary voltage to external control systems or programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Clearly indicated connector labeling and a QR code on the enclosure facilitate field commissioning and documentation access. Both versions are cULus certified for compliance with North American electrical installation codes.

📈 Industry Trends and Technical Details 📈

The shift to IP67 decentralized power supplies represents a broader industrial change toward cabinet-free automation, driven by standards such as NFPA 79 (Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery) and IEC 60204-1. By locating power conversion adjacent to field loads, automation engineers reduce copper cross-sections and eliminate thermal loads within primary enclosures.

While comparable decentralized three-phase IP67 power units in the 700 to 1,000 W class typically achieve conversion efficiencies between 95.0% and 96.5%, the DFPS series' values of 96.7% and 96.8% are at the upper threshold for passively cooled field-mounted power supplies. In industrial conveyor and 48 V motorized roller conveyor (MDR) applications, 48 V DC distribution is increasingly adopted over 24 V architectures to halve conductor current and further minimize I²R line losses in long production processes.
