🌟 Solid-State Lidar and the Power of Artificial Intelligence Combined!
MicroVision has commenced commercial production of MOVIA Pro, its next-generation short-range lidar sensor designed to transform autonomous navigation and industrial automation infrastructures. This innovative system integrates sensing and on-board AI-based perception into a single hardware platform.
⚙️ Transition to Solid-State Architecture and On-Board AI
The lidar market is experiencing a significant shift towards solid-state architectures to reduce the number of moving parts and lower manufacturing costs. Unlike traditional lidar systems, MOVIA Pro processes point cloud data directly within the device via an integrated, Linux-based open software framework. This allows the sensor to generate object-level information without the need for external computing modules. This consolidated architecture significantly reduces system complexity, decreasing the cabling and external hardware burden required for integrating autonomous applications.
🌧️ Precise Mapping Even in Challenging Conditions
The device utilizes multi-echo detection to provide accurate environmental mapping even in challenging conditions. This mechanism captures multiple returns from a single emitted light pulse, enabling the sensor to filter out noise such as dust or precipitation and accurately identify solid targets.
🔗 Industrial Connectivity and Flexibility
MicroVision CEO Glen DeVos stated, "With MOVIA Pro, we have brought together high-performance sensing, embedded computing power, an open software framework, and industrial-ready connectivity. This is a single device that can sense, perceive, and act, offering customers a more integrated and adaptable solution."
For integration into existing control architectures, the device supports Gigabit and 100Mbit Ethernet, as well as standard CAN (Controller Area Network) protocols. It also uses industrial-ready I/O connectors, enabling easy deployment in automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and traffic management control systems. As a software-defined component, the system is designed to accommodate ongoing perception algorithm updates over time.
🏭 Application Integration in Autonomous Environments
Manufactured at a facility in Orlando, the hardware is configured to support both immediate operational bottlenecks and advanced automation goals across multiple sectors.
- Warehouse and Industrial Automation: Provides continuous near-field coverage for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and forklift advanced driver assistance systems. This short-range obstacle detection is critical for ensuring safety in dynamic environments where machines and personnel operate in close proximity.
- Smart Transportation and Infrastructure: The high-resolution field of view supports automated traffic monitoring and intersection surveillance within the broader automotive data ecosystem. As the device converts point cloud data into actionable outputs, it can provide anonymized spatial data to ensure compliance with privacy considerations in public surveillance.
- Other Applications: It also supports unmanned aerial systems, terrestrial defense operations, and marine vessels that require compact hardware for environmental sensing and autonomous navigation.
💡 Differentiating Factor: On-Board Processing Power
The short-range industrial and autonomous lidar market includes both mechanical rotating and solid-state sensors. Competing solutions like Ouster OS0 and Hesai QT128 focus on producing high-resolution raw point clouds but require external electronic control units (ECUs). The MOVIA architecture, however, stands out with its pure solid-state design and on-board processing power. By housing the perception software directly within the sensor structure, the technology fundamentally shifts computational requirements away from external processing nodes, offering a leaner hardware profile tailored to edge AI constraints.
