Revolutionizing Manufacturing: Humanoid Robots and Physical AI
The severe labor shortage in the manufacturing sector is increasing demand for automation and machine feeding systems. Traditional industrial robots often require significant capital investment and production line redesigns to replace manual operator interventions such as clamping irregular workpieces, chip cleaning, inspection, and troubleshooting.
To overcome these obstacles, Mitsubishi Electric has developed a groundbreaking solution: an industry-first machining architecture that enables humanoid robots to collaborate directly with CNC machine tools using physical artificial intelligence.
🤝 Seamless Collaboration Between Humanoid Robots and CNC Machines
Mitsubishi Electric has developed an integrated machining platform where general-purpose humanoid robots and computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools collaborate seamlessly through physical artificial intelligence. This system allows bipedal or mobile humanoid manipulators to undertake tasks traditionally performed by workshop machines. These tasks include initial workpiece setup, internal tool area cleaning, finished product removal and transport, visual inspection, and error resolution.
⚙️ System Architecture: Three Core Components
This innovative system architecture integrates three main functional components:
- AI Machining Task Planner: Interprets operator instructions entered in natural language, automatically generates step-by-step machining routines, and schedules tasks between the CNC machine and the humanoid robot.
- Physical AI Integrated CNC Machine Tool: Exchanges operational data in natural language and coordinates kinematic execution with the robot in real-time.
- General-Purpose Humanoid Robot: Can navigate human workspaces and manipulate standard tools.
The task planner and the built-in intelligence of the CNC machine are powered by physical AI models developed using Mitsubishi Electric's proprietary Maisart AI technology suite.
🏭 Unmanned Operations Without Special Modifications
By interpreting high-level job directives in natural language, the physical AI line automatically generates coordinated execution scripts for both the robot and machine controller. This design eliminates traditional requirements such as writing custom PLC handshakes, dedicating specific digital I/O lines, or programming hard-coded robot motion paths for each work cell.
Humanoid robots can operate in front of standard machine enclosures without requiring expensive workshop layout changes or purpose-built environmental feeding systems. By replacing manual intervention with autonomous, multi-tasking robotic feeding, the platform establishes a foundation for unmanned factory operations and lights-out machining shifts.
✨ The Future of Manufacturing Starts Now
This technology is shaping the future of industrial automation. Humanoid robots, by performing complex tasks with human-like adaptability, increase efficiency and flexibility in manufacturing processes. Mitsubishi Electric's Maisart-powered physical AI platform, directly integrated into the CNC's internal numerical core, allows the machine to inform the robot about internal spindle loads, remaining tool life, or specific alarm codes. This direct connection enables the humanoid to autonomously replace worn inserts or clear tangled chip nests without external controller intervention.
