Artec 3D has introduced Artec Twins, a new digital twin software platform that unifies and processes large-scale spatial data. This platform is designed to support challenging mapping, inspection, and measurement workflows across industries such as architecture, engineering, construction (AEC), mining, infrastructure, and public safety.

    🌐 Multi-Source Data Integration

Artec Twins was developed to complement the Artec Jet SLAM mobile LiDAR scanner. However, it is not limited to this; it also accepts data from various terrestrial and aerial technologies, including stationary 3D scanners, drones, satellites, and mobile photogrammetry devices. This allows for the combination of high-detail local scans with broad topographical overviews, eliminating the need for separate software for different capture scales.

Art Yukhin, President and CEO of Artec 3D, states, "Existing solutions often force users to choose between different capture methods. Artec Twins unifies all these technologies within a single environment." The platform enables multi-technology data ingestion on a local workstation without the need for external cloud transfers, ensuring the security of proprietary data for sensitive infrastructure operations.

✨ High-Accuracy Processing and Geometry Preservation

One of the biggest challenges in creating spatial models is managing the computational load of point clouds containing billions of individual coordinates. Artec Twins' processing engine achieves processing speeds of up to 200 frames per second without data decimation. This capability allows users to interact with environments exceeding 100 square kilometers, navigate the full-resolution model in real-time, and retain critical geometric details.

Yukhin adds, "We designed an engine that can process extremely large point clouds without decimation or lag. Geometry remains a priority to guarantee the reliability of measurements." Analytical visualization layers such as elevation, normals, density, and color mapping provide operators with specialized views to detect structural anomalies or material properties. First-person navigation controls enable engineering teams to conduct virtual site inspections and take precise spatial measurements from the unified dataset.

🎨 Gaussian Splatting for Complex Surface Reconstruction

The software introduces Gaussian splatting capabilities, creating high-fidelity 3D scenes by combining photographic and video data with LiDAR point clouds. This approach resolves common photogrammetry and scanning challenges, such as representing highly reflective or translucent materials that traditional meshing algorithms struggle to reconstruct accurately. Operators can seamlessly switch between measurement-optimized point clouds, polygonal meshes, and visually accurate Gaussian splats.

🗺️ Geospatial Alignment and Volumetric Analysis

To function as a suitable tool for industrial measurement and maintenance, the system includes native support for georeferencing and ground control points (GCPs). This aligns captured datasets with real-world coordinate systems. Surveyors and engineers can calculate distances, extract cross-sections, compute material volumes, and fit geometric primitives to scanned data. By overlaying physical point clouds with original computer-aided design (CAD) files, users can perform automated deviation analyses, verify construction tolerances, and monitor site degradation with successive temporal scans.

    💡 Additional Information

In the industrial 3D data processing market, platforms like Leica Cyclone, Trimble RealWorks, and FARO Scene have traditionally dominated the management of large terrestrial laser scanning datasets. These systems heavily utilize dynamic Level of Detail (LOD) and data decimation algorithms to maintain workstation performance when processing multi-gigabyte point clouds. The Artec 3D platform differentiates itself by maintaining consistently high frame-rate navigation on undecimated data, prioritizing absolute geometric integrity for micro-measurements within macro environments. Furthermore, while competing software primarily relies on point clouds and photogrammetric meshes, the direct native integration of Gaussian splatting with SLAM and terrestrial LiDAR data offers a unique hybrid processing approach. This bridges the gap between metrology-grade inspection software and high-end architectural visualization engines, streamlining the transition from data capture to final structural analysis.
