🚀 Controlling Remote Assets Just Got Easier

Industrial facilities in the mining, water, and utilities sectors rely on critical assets spread across hundreds of kilometers. Connecting these remote pumps, tanks, and reservoirs with traditional cabling is often impractical due to high costs and the logistical complexity of challenging terrain. Ian Loudon, Omniflex International Sales and Marketing Manager, notes that even simple faults without remote visibility require time-consuming site visits before they can be assessed. To address this, wireless telemetry offers a practical way to integrate isolated equipment directly into the broader operational control network, enabling instant, automated responses to changing process conditions.

💡 Smart Connectivity with Teleterm D3R

Demonstrating this capability, a mining application in Zimbabwe used wireless telemetry to automatically control feed pumps based on high and low setpoints from a water storage tank seven kilometers away. To facilitate such architectures, Omniflex offers the Teleterm D3R, a versatile outstation that interfaces with energy meters via serial connection and sensors via a microLAN port. Instead of continuously polling each device, the wireless network optimizes bandwidth by transmitting data only on a change of state or at predefined intervals. Furthermore, an Ethernet connection allows the D3R to seamlessly connect remote assets to existing central SCADA infrastructure, while a built-in display provides local operators with instant parameter readings, such as reservoir fill percentages.

🔋 Power Constraints and Report by Exception

In remote industrial environments, reliable data links often rely on UHF/VHF radio telemetry, licensed microwave bands, or low-power cellular networks (such as LTE-M or NB-IoT) rather than standard Wi-Fi. Since these remote terminal units (RTUs) are often deployed in isolated areas lacking reliable grid power, they must operate with extreme energy efficiency, often relying entirely on small solar panels and localized battery banks. By transmitting data on an event-driven basis – a protocol method known as Report by Exception (RbE) – modern telemetry outstations significantly reduce radio transmission time and conserve power. This low-power, high-range architecture is vital for distributed SCADA systems managing critical municipal water pipelines, offshore platforms, or remote mining tailings dams, ensuring data integrity without depleting remote power reserves.
