Next-Generation Motion Series for Hygienic Environments from Festo
Festo has introduced its new stainless steel motion series, designed to meet the demanding hygiene and corrosion resistance requirements in sectors such as food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and packaging. This integrated solution consists of the EMMH-AS servo motor and the EPRF-BS electric cylinder.
Stainless Steel Strength and Superior Protection
- Material: All components are made from robust 316L (1.4404) stainless steel, providing superior resistance to aggressive cleaning agents and saltwater.
- Hygienic Design: Maximum hygiene is ensured through smooth, crevice-free surfaces, food-grade NSF-H1 grease, and special hygienic seals.
- Protection Class: Offers full protection against high-pressure washing with an IP69K rating and against corrosion with a CRC4 rating.
Precise Control and High Performance
- EPRF-BS Electric Cylinder:
Repeatability of ±0.02 mm with precise ball screw drive.
- Thrust force up to 12,500 N and stroke length up to 1,000 mm.
- Prevents internal condensation with a double-sealed wiper system and hygienic ventilation.
[*]EMMH-AS Servo Motor:
Power options from 195 W to 1.52 kW.
- Battery-free absolute encoder for precise feedback.
- Optional holding brakes for vertical axes.
- Single-cable solution with pressure compensation tube for reliability in humid conditions.
Easy Integration and Commissioning
This series from Festo operates as a complete system, including the actuator, motor, controller, and hygienic cabling. Festo's Electric Motion Sizing and Automation Suite tools shorten engineering time and minimize design errors. Compatibility with industrial fieldbus protocols such as Profinet, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, and Modbus ensures seamless integration into modern machine architectures.
Innovative Solution to the Condensation Problem
Condensation caused by temperature changes in washdown environments is a serious problem for traditional actuators. The pressure compensation tube in the EMMH-AS motor and the hygienic ventilation in the EPRF-BS cylinder balance internal pressure during thermal cycles, preventing the vacuum effect and thus moisture ingress. These mechanisms, combined with the superior resistance of 316L stainless steel to chlorinated cleaning chemicals, significantly extend the lifespan of electric actuators in harsh environments.
