✨ Revolution in Production: SCHUNK SLD Mini and Midi Series
SCHUNK has launched its SLD Mini and SLD Midi series of direct-drive linear axes to eliminate bottlenecks in high-speed assembly and handling operations. These new-generation solutions put an end to problems like mechanical backlash and belt elasticity found in traditional systems, aiming to increase efficiency, especially in electronics, battery, and medical device manufacturing.
⚙️ Engineering Marvel: Integrated Design, Superior Performance
The SLD Mini and SLD Midi axes integrate the direct-drive motor and precise measurement system within a single profile. This integrated structure eliminates the need for intermediate components such as gearboxes, couplings, or timing belts. The result? A system that eliminates mechanical backlash, reduces positioning hysteresis, and optimizes the installation space within the machine.
- Speed Demon: Offers accelerations up to 100 m/s² and linear speeds up to 5 m/s. This significantly shortens point-to-point transfer times in pick-and-place applications.
- Flexible Solutions: The axes, produced in different sizes and winding configurations, can be customized according to moving mass, thermal duty cycle, and mechanical space requirements.
🤝 Seamless Integration with Multi-Axis Systems
These linear axes can be used in a wide range of applications, from single-axis transfers to complex Cartesian gantry systems. In automated cells, they interact directly with robot arms, rotary actuators, and process instruments. For example, in precise electronic assembly, the axes manage main component transport, while electric parallel grippers perform part placement, and force-torque sensors monitor placement loads to prevent component breakage.
Thanks to SCHUNK's integration with visual modules like the AI-supported 2D Grasping Kit, the commissioning of complex pick-and-place tasks is simplified. Digital configuration tools and application-specific axis finders ensure that thermal and mechanical loads remain within specified limits.
🔍 Technical Details and Competitive Analysis
Direct-drive linear axes operate on the principle of permanent magnet synchronous linear motors (PMSLM). These systems compete with high-precision ball screws and high-end pneumatic rod cylinders in high-precision industrial automation. While ball screws offer high thrust force at a lower cost, their speeds are typically limited to 1.5 to 2 m/s.
Similar dynamic direct-drive modules in the European market include the Festo ELGD-DIS series, LinMot linear motor guides, and HIWIN LMC iron-core linear motor stages. These solutions also generally offer maximum accelerations between 50 and 100 m/s² and speeds between 3 and 5 m/s. Direct-drive systems rely on sub-micrometer resolution linear encoders to achieve bidirectional repeatability between ±0.005 mm and ±0.001 mm. However, thermal management in high duty cycles is critical to maintaining positioning accuracy.
