🤖 Next-Generation Navigation Solutions for AGVs and AMRs from SIGMATEK

SIGMATEK has introduced updates to its SLAMLoc software and unveiled the AGV Automation Visionary 3D platform to enhance the navigation accuracy of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). These innovations offer solutions to challenges encountered in dynamic intralogistics and industrial automation environments, particularly temporary obstacles and strict safety protocols.

🗺️ Sensor Fusion and Dynamic Route Calculation

The SLAMLoc software processes data from multiple laser scanners on the vehicle using simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology. This data is combined to create a comprehensive map of the vehicle's surroundings. To manage temporary obstacles, the system generates a MiniMap that captures the immediate physical space around the vehicle. This allows the route algorithm to instantly calculate alternative paths when unexpected obstacles block the planned route, minimizing operational disruptions.

🛠️ Offline Diagnostics and System Troubleshooting

To accelerate commissioning and maintenance processes, the positioning software includes a detailed troubleshooting module that does not require physical access to the vehicle. Engineers can analyze specific operational scenarios offline to determine why an automated transport unit stopped, deviated from its route, or experienced a navigation interruption. This diagnostic capability reduces service times and supports automatic route optimization in production facilities.

    👁️‍🗨️ Three-Dimensional Obstacle Detection

Relying solely on two-dimensional laser scanners limits a vehicle's ability to detect complex geometric hazards. To address this issue, the AGV Automation Visionary 3D software integrates with SICK's Visionary-T Mini cameras. This hardware-software combination enables volumetric monitoring of the vehicle's route. The 3D detection system identifies physical anomalies located above or below the 2D scanning plane, such as forklift forks, stairs, elevator shafts, and low-profile objects on the factory floor.

💡 Technical Details and Competitive Advantages

In the industrial automation market, SLAM-based navigation architectures compete with established natural feature navigation platforms like BlueBotics ANT and open-source applications using the ROS 2 (Robot Operating System) navigation stack. While open-source ROS 2 setups require extensive custom programming for sensor fusion and local cost map generation, proprietary solutions like SLAMLoc offer pre-validated algorithms for multi-scanner fusion and dynamic rerouting.

Furthermore, standard 2D planar LiDAR systems are blind to negative obstacles (drops) and overhead structures. By directly integrating SICK's time-of-flight (ToF) 3D cameras into the navigation logic, the system provides higher point cloud density at close ranges compared to standard 2D scanners. This hardware integration directly addresses a known safety vulnerability in traditional AGV obstacle detection, offering measurable improvements in process stability in dense operational environments.
