Fraunhofer IPMS Redefines Industrial Communication with Li-Fi TinySpot!

Fraunhofer IPMS has introduced Li-Fi TinySpot, a miniature and ultra-low power optical transceiver specifically designed for industrial sensors. This innovative device offers a groundbreaking solution for wireless data communication in confined spaces and environments with high electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Why Li-Fi TinySpot?

  • Compact and Energy Efficient: With only 5 mW power consumption, it extends battery life. Its dimensions of 15 mm x 21 mm x 3.3 mm and weight of 1 gram enable dense integration.
  • High-Speed and Secure Communication: Offers up to 20 Mbps full-duplex communication. It uses light instead of radio waves, ensuring interference-free and secure data transfer.
  • Versatile Integration: Supports standard UART and SPI interfaces, allowing for easy integration into microcontroller and FPGA-based boards.
  • Low Latency: With an ultra-low transmission latency of only 170 nanoseconds, it provides instant response in embedded control and status monitoring applications.

Contactless Solution for Harsh Environments

Li-Fi TinySpot offers a reliable alternative to wear-prone mechanical connectors and slip rings. It is ideal for environments sensitive to contaminants, such as tool heads, small rotary tables, and hermetically sealed enclosures. The device supports SIR, FIR, and VFIR standards, enabling the modernization of legacy IrDA (Infrared Data Association) interfaces without adding complex radio frequency hardware. Operating with Class 1 eye safety, this system provides a secure and contactless data link that is completely immune to electromagnetic interference.

Optical Data Links in EMI-Critical Environments

In demanding industrial environments, traditional radio frequency (RF) technologies like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi can experience packet loss due to electromagnetic interference (EMI) from heavy machinery, welding equipment, or variable frequency drives. Optical communication (Li-Fi) completely bypasses the RF spectrum, providing an immune and highly secure data channel that cannot be easily intercepted, spoofed, or jammed. Modern optical transceivers like TinySpot enable simultaneous, low-latency bidirectional communication through advanced modulation and full-duplex capabilities.
