💡 Next-Generation Automation in Green Hydrogen Production
Green hydrogen production is a challenging field requiring complex process control. High pressures, explosive environments, and massive electrolyzer stacks render traditional automation approaches inadequate. Festo offers modular and decentralized automation architectures as a solution to these challenges. These systems simplify control between electrolyzers, purification stages, and gas balancing units, thereby increasing efficiency.
🔌 Decentralized I/O Architecture and Fluid Control
Electrolyzer systems maintain cell integrity through precise valve switching, pressure regulation, and fluid recirculation. While traditional centralized control systems lead to issues such as long cabling and signal interference, Festo's CPX-AP-I remote I/O system and VTUG valve terminal series eliminate these problems. IP65/IP67 rated remote I/O modules are placed directly on process units, reducing cabling complexity and enabling independent operation of each process section. This allows systems such as deoxygenation, water treatment, and pressure swing adsorption to become self-sufficient modules.
🛡️ Functional Safety and Explosion Protection
Working with pressurized hydrogen gas requires strict adherence to functional safety and explosion protection directives. Festo's automation strategy integrates ATEX and IECEx compliance directly into field components. Intrinsically safe electrical interfaces and explosion-proof pneumatic actuators guarantee safe operation in hazardous areas. SIL-rated safety interlocks and certified valve manifolds ensure reliable execution of emergency shutdown procedures and nitrogen purging routines.
⚙️ Modular Standardization for Industrial Scaling
Scaling hydrogen production from pilot plants to industrial scale requires modular repeatability rather than custom engineering. Festo offers pre-configured, tested automation packages that combine field instrumentation, pneumatic actuators, and communication interfaces. These packages simplify system integration, reduce costs, and accelerate commercial electrolyzer installations.
🌐 The Festo Difference in Competition
Festo distinguishes itself from competitors with its CPX-AP-I and CPX-AP-A communication backbone. This system offers real-time communication speeds up to 200 MBaud, cable distances up to 50 meters, and support for up to 80 modules or valve terminals per bus interface. This allows electrolyzer manufacturers to place compact pneumatic valve terminals (such as VTUG) directly on unit frames. The system processes IO-Link, digital, and analog process signals via standard industrial protocols (EtherCAT, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP) without the need for secondary communication gateways, providing a high-density, low-footprint automation layer for containerized PEM and alkaline electrolyzer plants.
