✨ Technologies Unveiled at FABTECH 2026

FANUC America showcased groundbreaking robotic welding, laser processing, and automated painting systems for the metal fabrication industry at FABTECH 2026, held in Chicago from September 8-10, 2026. These innovative systems aim to enhance process stability, precision, and efficiency in heavy industry and manufacturing.

🚀 Advanced Robotic Platforms and Applications

The technical demonstrations featured advanced robotic platforms supported by R-50iA and R-30iB Plus controller architectures. These systems were equipped with features such as integrated force control, coordinated motion, and machine vision. For example, the LR-10iA/10 laser processing cell combined automated laser welding and precise marking in a single work cell, operating with physical interfaces and standardized numerical path generation. Automated welding cells, thanks to specialized path planning algorithms, servo-driven tactile sensing, and custom plasma cutting interfaces, could regulate material removal and joint penetration without manual intervention.

    🏭 Industrial Application Areas

These systems were designed for structural steel fabrication, heavy equipment manufacturing, shipbuilding, and industrial coating sectors. Prominent use cases included vertical welding on large structural components with magnetic-based collaborative robots, seam tracking welding of complex multi-sided geometries using seventh-axis linear rails and coordinated positioners, and automated assembly kits. These configurations aimed to address labor constraints and challenging automation environments with portable and easily programmable hardware.

💡 Easy Integration and AI-Powered Solutions

The deployment of these systems emphasized rapid integration into existing production environments through simplified programming interfaces and modular hardware options. For instance, the lightweight CRX-3iA collaborative robot utilized a magnetic base that could be directly mounted onto structural steel surfaces for portable welding tasks. Additionally, AI-powered material handling setups, integrating Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise platforms with FANUC iRVision, could interpret handwritten production documents, translate instructions into coordinate data, and guide pick-and-place operations via collaborative robot arms.

📈 Operational Impact and Performance Metrics

The demonstrated automation technologies provided significant benefits by increasing operational repeatability and reducing setup times for high-mix fabrication lines. The P-55/15-21A painting robot maintained uniform coating thickness on continuously moving parts with integrated line tracking and a VersaBell 3 applicator. Furthermore, torque tightening applications using collaborative robots with integrated force control eliminated manual torque verification errors and guaranteed structural compliance in high-volume assembly operations by utilizing real-time feedback loops to verify fastener tolerances.

The future of fabrication is robotic, precise, adaptive, and AI-driven. From vision and force control to automated welding and painting, intelligent automation is redefining heavy manufacturing.
