IMTS 2026: Manufacturers Modernize Systems, Cables Transform
At the IMTS 2026 exhibition in Chicago, solutions were showcased for the challenges and trends manufacturers face as they keep pace with global industrial changes. While topics such as connectivity, robotics, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity were prominent, challenges like supply chain uncertainties, tariffs, and labor shortages were also addressed.
Perspective from Infinite Electronics
Dustin Guttadauro, Product Manager for Infinite Electronics' L-Com brand, stated that customer needs reflect global and industrial trends. He emphasized that certification requirements for specific applications have increased. For example, ratings for flammability, safety, or waterproofness are now more critical.
Miniaturization and Increased Speed in Cables
Guttadauro indicated a shift towards smaller, bendable circular connectors instead of large plastic connectors. He mentioned that older backbone technologies like Ethernet are being adapted to this new format. He also added that cable technologies are increasing in speed, and there is a rising demand for higher-speed solutions, replacing the slow-speed cables that have been dominant for 20 years. This situation highlights the need for equipment renewal and adaptation to new standards.
Global Standards and Challenges
New standards also encompass international safety regulations. For instance, compliance with different standards in Europe and the US is required. As Infinite Electronics' global reach expands, manufacturers operating in Asia and Europe further increase the importance of adhering to these diverse standards.
Supply Chain and Manufacturing Location
Guttadauro noted that global tariffs and differing perspectives on products manufactured in the US and China create challenges. Changing the manufacturing location of a quality product is a complex process that requires time and energy. This situation tests manufacturers' flexibility and adaptability.
