Vention Opens Physical AI Lab in Montreal
Vention, a Montreal-based automation platform provider, has launched a new physical AI and industrial robotics laboratory in Canada that aims to revolutionize the field of industrial robotics. This lab seeks to take robotic manipulation from the latest AI research and bring it to real-world, scalable manufacturing applications.
Lab Focus Areas
Research conducted at this Montreal-based laboratory will encompass applied manufacturing use cases, industrial data collection processes, and post-training foundational models for robotics. These efforts, building upon Vention's existing intellectual property, aim to validate new physical AI capabilities that can withstand the reliability, cost, and variability requirements of production lines.
Scalable Deployment and Cost Reduction
Vention anticipates that as foundational models mature, the complexity costs of deployment will decrease. This could enable more manufacturers to utilize this technology on factory floors.
Research Agenda
The lab's research agenda integrates industrial data collection, robotic control, motion planning, classical computer vision, vision foundational models, learning from demonstration, and reinforcement learning. These efforts will focus on complex and unstructured manufacturing tasks.
Bridging Academic Research and Manufacturing
Jimmy Li, Vention's Director of Physical AI, states that the lab's most important feature is its creation of a loop that directly connects academic research with manufacturing problems and feeds production feedback back into research. Li adds, "Instead of our customers waiting for a finished product, they are with us as we build it. This is unique in this space and allows us to move faster from a research outcome to something working on the factory floor.
