Future Factories Taking Shape with Hexagon Robotics and Schaeffler Collaboration

Hexagon Robotics and motion technology giant Schaeffler have passed a significant milestone in their strategic partnership. Hexagon's multi-purpose humanoid robot, AEON, has entered Schaeffler's "Humanoid Gym" in Germany. This step represents the next operational phase of the plan to deploy at least 1,000 AEON humanoid robots in Schaeffler's production facilities in the coming years.

From Lab to Factory Floor: Challenges and Solutions

Integrating humanoid robots into complex industrial production requires bridging the gap between laboratory capabilities and repeatable, high-reliability performance on actual production lines. Scaling autonomous robotic systems across the factory brings technical and operational challenges, such as training robots for various manipulation tasks, validating performance against real-world constraints, and preventing operational disruptions during integration.

To overcome these challenges, Hexagon Robotics and Schaeffler have initiated a collaboration based on their strategic partnership announced in April 2026. This partnership combines Hexagon Robotics' AI-powered robotic developments with Schaeffler's role as both an end-user manufacturer and a supplier of advanced motion and actuator technologies.

The Humanoid Gym: "Train → Validate → Deploy" Framework

The technical solution is centered in the Humanoid Gym, a dedicated industrial testing and training facility operating under a structured "Train → Validate → Deploy" framework. Responsibilities are shared between the partners to align robotic intelligence with advanced mechanical motion components:

  • Hexagon Robotics: Provides the AEON humanoid platform, software architecture, and imitation learning models.
  • Schaeffler: Provides the industrial test environment, representative factory workflows, operational integration teams, and advanced actuator technology for the AEON platform.

At the system level, AEON learns new industrial capabilities through imitation learning and repeated practice within the controlled gym environment. The platform develops and validates robot policies using representative manufacturing applications directly derived from Schaeffler's factory floor. This pre-deployment training model allows internal engineering teams to build the operational expertise required to integrate, supervise, and maintain humanoid robots, while ensuring new skills meet reliability criteria before live deployment.

Future Plans: Rapid Deployment and Scaling

The implementation strategy focuses on accelerating AEON deployment across multiple production use cases within Schaeffler over the next six months.

The Humanoid Gym serves as a pre-deployment validation gateway to qualify robot policies without disrupting active production lines. Once validated in the test facility, robots will transition to live production tasks, establishing an operational pathway to scale the deployment of at least 1,000 AEON humanoid robots across Schaeffler's global manufacturing footprint.
