The OPC Foundation has taken a significant step to advance OPC UA in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). By expanding existing prototype work, it aims to transform over 430 industrial information models into AI-compatible assets. This transformation will facilitate data access for engineering support systems, semantic search, and intelligent automation.
### What are OPC UA and Companion Specifications?
OPC UA Companion Specifications provide consistent and machine-readable information models for specific industries, devices, and use cases. These standards include both written specifications and UA NodeSet files for implementation. Created by the OPC Foundation and its collaborating groups, these specifications standardize data meaning and structure, enabling semantic interoperability across manufacturers, products, and industries.
### Integration of AI with OPC UA
Prototype work has shown that OPC UA core specifications can be converted into AI-ready assets such as Markdown files, image descriptions, token-optimized RAG chunks, vector embeddings, and REST-based query interfaces. The OPC Foundation plans to expand this infrastructure to make the entire set of Companion Specifications more accessible and reliable for AI systems.

Dr. Holger Kenn stated, "It is critical for the reliability of Agentic AI systems to rely on the semantic infrastructure of OPC UA," while Stefan Hoppe, President of the OPC Foundation, added, "These efforts enable the deep industry knowledge developed by the OPC Foundation and its partners to be used more effectively by engineers and AI applications."
