The OPC Foundation and the LoRa Alliance announced that they have formed a joint working group to enable the integration of LoRaWAN technology with OPC UA. This collaboration aims to increase compatibility between low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) and industrial automation.

While LoRaWAN is widely used for long-range and low-power wireless communication, OPC UA provides a standard information modeling framework for secure and platform-independent data exchange in industrial and enterprise environments. These two technologies create a strong synergy that will enable efficient collection of sensor data at the edge, along with semantically rich and standardized data sharing.

    ### Purpose of the Joint Work
    • To enable the representation of data from LoRaWAN-based devices and systems in an OPC UA environment.
    • To establish enhanced interoperability between LPWAN networks and industrial automation, enterprise, and cloud-based systems.
    • To facilitate the integration of data streams with OPC UA-enabled systems.

    ### Participation and Progress
The first meeting of the new joint working group will be held on May 13, 2026. Participation and contributions from relevant organizations and individuals are expected.

    ### About LoRa Alliance
The LoRa Alliance, founded in 2015, is a non-profit organization that develops the LoRaWAN standard and provides product certification. LoRaWAN, which has the highest adoption rate globally, is a fundamental LPWAN technology for IoT.

    ### About OPC Foundation
Operating since 1996, the OPC Foundation supports the development and proliferation of data and information exchange standards in the industry. It aims for secure and reliable data integration across multiple vendors and platforms.

This collaboration is seen as an important step that will accelerate digital transformation in many areas such as industrial automation, smart infrastructures, energy management, building automation, and environmental monitoring.
