The OPC Foundation, in collaboration with the LoRa Alliance, has initiated a mapping development process to integrate LoRaWAN technology into the OPC UA platform. This partnership aims to establish a standardized bridge between low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) and industrial automation systems.

    ### Purpose of the Collaboration
LoRaWAN offers long-range and low-power wireless communication, making it an ideal solution for sensors, remote monitoring, meters, and battery-powered field devices. OPC UA, on the other hand, provides a platform-independent, secure, and robust framework for industrial data exchange. Together, these two technologies enable seamless and standardized sharing of data between industrial automation, enterprise, and cloud systems.

    ### Why Is This Integration Important?
    • LoRaWAN provides efficient wireless connectivity at the edge.
    • OPC UA supports full data integration with a rich semantic data model.
    • A standardized mapping allows users and solution providers to easily integrate LoRaWAN data into OPC UA systems.
    • It can find applications in many areas such as industrial automation, smart infrastructure, energy, building systems, and environmental monitoring.

The inaugural meeting of the new working group will take place on May 13, 2026. Industry stakeholders and interested individuals are invited to participate in this process.

    ### Statements from Officials
Alper Yegin, CEO of the LoRa Alliance, stated that this joint initiative will simplify integration and accelerate adoption in industrial and IoT applications. Stefan Hoppe, President of the OPC Foundation, added that the two technologies are complementary and this collaboration will create more value for users.

    ### About the LoRa Alliance
The LoRa Alliance is a non-profit association that develops the LoRaWAN standard and manages its product certification program. It has grown rapidly since 2015 to include over 300 members. LoRaWAN is the leading LPWAN standard for IoT, complementing cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

    ### About the OPC Foundation
Since 1996, the OPC Foundation has supported the development and adoption of OPC standards, facilitating data exchange between industrial automation and information technologies. With over 1010 members, it provides multi-platform, secure, and reliable data integration.
