## Safety-Critical Edge AI Platform Integration for Industrial Applications
QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited, announced at Hannover Messe an expansion of its partnership with NVIDIA, integrating QNX® OS for Safety 8.0 with the NVIDIA IGX Thor platform. This integration enables the development of advanced edge AI systems in regulated environments such as surgical robotics, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and industrial automation, thanks to the combination of a real-time operating system (RTOS) and a functional safety stack.
### Unified Architecture and Critical System Management
The single integration addresses the need to host both safety-critical control and high-performance AI workloads on a single piece of hardware. By using QNX OS for Safety 8.0 with the NVIDIA IGX Thor Halos Safety Stack, system architectures can be unified with a mixed-criticality approach. This allows AI functions such as perception, spatial planning, and decision-making to run on NVIDIA's accelerated computing cores, while vital safety functions remain isolated and deterministic within the QNX microkernel.
### Technical Reliability and Certification
Functional safety is a mandatory requirement in the medical technology and heavy industry sectors. This platform supports the necessary certification processes for regulated equipment. The structural isolation of the QNX microkernel prevents low-priority processes from interfering with high-priority safety tasks. This is critical for maintaining system integrity in software-defined machines where autonomous behaviors are controlled at the edge.
### Technology Transfer from Automotive to Industry
This partnership transfers the safety architecture validated with the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor development kit to the industrial and medical fields, enabling the standardization of intelligent and regulated systems. The determinism and functional safety levels found in autonomous vehicles are being applied to smart factory components and digital supply chain robots.
### Development Scalability and Early Access
The unified platform is designed to support all stages of the product lifecycle, from prototype to full production. This consistency in software architecture reduces development costs and accelerates time to market. Early Access registration for QNX with the NVIDIA IGX Thor Developer Kit is open, providing a limited number of customers with the technical capabilities to develop and validate critical safety applications.
