  • Universal Robots debuted its newest robot at Fabtech 2025. The UR8 Long features a compact build and a lengthy 1,750 mm reach, making it useful in applications like welding and pick and place.

    ### Robot Reach Capacity and Innovations with UR8 Long

One of the limiting characteristics of a robot is its reach capacity. As a robot's reach capacity increases, its payload capacity generally decreases. This is due to the increase in cantilever forces on the robot's axes. However, a robot with a long reach capacity can be advantageous in certain applications, such as welding and bin picking, because it can cover a wider area.

At the 2025 Fabtech Exhibition, Universal Robots introduced its newest robot, the UR8 Long, specifically designed for welding and bin picking applications. This robot has an 8 kg payload capacity and an extended reach capacity of up to 1,750 mm.

    #### About UR8 Long

The UR8 Long has a reach capacity of 1,750 mm and shares the same structure as the UR20 but with a slimmer profile. It has an 8 kg payload capacity for full performance and a maximum of 10 kg. The long-reach robot has a footprint of only 204 mm and weighs 44.7 kg, making it suitable for mounting in confined spaces while being easily movable for different tasks on the factory floor.

Users can program the UR8 Long with Universal Robots’ PolyScope 5 and PolyScope X programming software. These software packages feature an intuitive graphical interface and pre-programmed functions that even users without prior programming experience can easily use.

Teaching the UR8 Long is also extremely simple. With an integrated force sensor and a teach button, users can move the robot to the desired position and press the teach button to complete the process.

    #### External Axes with Robot Control

Some applications require controlling an axis that is not part of the robot arm. These axes are called external axes and are very useful in welding applications when parts need to be rotated while being welded; for example, for circular parts.

The UR8 is fully equipped with Universal Robots’ MotionPlus motion control technology. This technology allows for the easy integration of linear axes, rotary positioners, and rotary turntables. MotionPlus technology features a coordinated motion function that combines the tool center point (TCP) and the position of the external axis in a single movement. The calculated path combines the TCP and the external
