The Rise of Renewable Energy Technologies in Turkey and the World
Renewable energy refers to inexhaustible sources like solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass, which are derived from natural resources that can replenish themselves. Fossil fuels, on the other hand, lead to a carbon dioxide deficit, causing greenhouse effect and global warming issues, while the emission of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides results in acid rain. Furthermore, economically, they increase external dependency in meeting energy needs. To prevent these problems, the 21st century has focused on renewable energy.

Solar Energy
Solar energy, one of the most widely used renewable energy sources, is an unlimited energy source. Today, the use of solar energy has reached 25%. Globally, China is the largest producer of solar panels, followed by regions such as Germany, California, and India. In Turkey, the installed capacity of solar energy was 0.02 MW in 2010, rose to 6.5 GW in 2020, and is expected to reach 21.6 GW in 2025. With technological advancements, photovoltaic panels, energy storage systems, and smart grids have been developed.
Wind Energy
Wind energy is obtained by converting the kinetic energy of air into electrical energy. Mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy through wind turbines. In regions with high wind intensity, energy production costs decrease. Globally, wind energy is widely used in China, the USA, and Europe. In Turkey, the Aegean and Marmara regions stand out in terms of wind potential. Technological advancements have also been effective in wind energy; many innovations such as performance monitoring and management have been provided through turbine components, blade designs, and digital systems.
Hydroelectric Energy
Hydroelectric energy is obtained by converting the energy of flowing water into electrical energy. In Turkey, the installed capacity of hydroelectric energy is at 31 GW and is generally used in dams and power plants. Globally, China leads in hydroelectric energy capacity, followed by countries such as Brazil and Canada. Storage hydroelectric systems balance energy fluctuations and are supported by small but effective projects like floating solar panels.
In conclusion, the benefits of technology are clearly visible in renewable energy sources; significant improvements have been made in terms of both cost and quality, and these developments continue to increase. Renewable energy, which is already environmentally friendly, has become more efficient and effective with technological advancements.
