Whether it's a chemical production line, a pharmaceutical mixer, or a food packaging plant, being able to see what's happening in real-time can make the difference between smooth production and unplanned downtime. However, adding video feeds to control interfaces often meant separate software, complex configuration, and limited camera compatibility.
R. STAHL's new Remote HMI V7 update offers a new visual experience for operators and maintenance personnel. By adding integrated IP camera support directly into the Thin Client platform, the company allows operators to monitor live camera feeds as part of their normal control screens. Since the system uses the ONVIF standard, which supports almost all common network cameras on the market, setup is quick and requires no software add-ons.
In many industries, cameras are increasingly considered sensors, as operators use them not only for safety but also for process feedback, especially in areas such as foam detection, liquid flow monitoring, and pump inspection. Dome cameras with pan, tilt, and zoom functions are particularly useful as they can automatically scan different areas and provide personnel with a broad overview without requiring multiple fixed units.
Over 10,000 Remote HMI installations are already in use worldwide, supporting DCS, MES, and browser-based process systems. The V7 update builds on this foundation with new visualization, monitoring, and data management tools that reflect how modern plants operate. By integrating cameras as process sensors, R. STAHL blurs the line between human-machine interface and real-time situational awareness.
R. STAHL recently announced its new HMI V7 firmware update.

Integrated Visual Monitoring
With the new firmware, users can connect cameras directly via the HMI and display them as floating windows on the interface. The windows can be repositioned anywhere on the screen, allowing operators to monitor process visuals while interacting with other controls or system data. Bringing visual and process information together in one place makes it easier for operators to find common mechanical issues such as leaks, monitoring valve operations, or inspecting fill levels at a glance.Operators can now monitor live camera feeds directly from the HMI interface via floating windows. Security and System Health Improvements
In addition to the new camera support, Remote HMI version 7 offers several other upgrades. The platform now includes persistent SSD status monitoring to warn operators before a drive approaches the end of its write cycle life. This feature monitors temperature, write speeds, and power cycles to extend device life and reduce unplanned maintenance. R. STAHL has also added a QR code support function that makes it easier for users to contact technical support. Scanning the on-screen code automatically sends system details to the R. STAHL service team for faster troubleshooting.Operating and Network Security
Remote HMI V7 continues to run on the secure Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 operating system, with Microsoft updates guaranteed until 2031. The software operates in kiosk mode, meaning users can only access pre-authorized programs and not the underlying Windows environment. The device continues to feature optional write protection filters that prevent unauthorized file changes, while offering integrated Microsoft Defender antivirus and configurable USB restrictions, providing an additional layer of security.Over 10,000 Remote HMI installations are already in use worldwide, supporting DCS, MES, and browser-based process systems.
