Kyntronics aims to develop hybrid motion control by combining servo control with hydraulic actuators. To better understand this technology, the engineering team delved into the details with several questions.
While motion control is a complex field, it remains one of the most common applications of control systems worldwide. Motion control involves creating precise motion profiles that continuously determine position, velocity, and force.
Industrial motion is typically provided by hydraulic or electric current. However, the hybrid linear actuator system offered by Kyntronics introduces a new approach by combining both electric and hydraulic features. We spoke with Carl Richter, Vice President and General Manager of Kyntronics, about the details and applications of this technology.
### How Hybrid Linear Actuators Work
Hybrid linear actuators combine the power and durability of hydraulics with the precision and control of electric actuators. A compact, fluid-based cylinder (similar to a hydraulic cylinder) is integrated with a servo motor and a gear pump to provide linear motion. A standard PID control system is implemented.
### Operation and Advantages
Hybrid actuators provide programmable positioning, speed control, and load monitoring, making them ideal for automation and Industry 4.0 applications. These systems offer advantages such as energy efficiency, a sealed design that requires no external reservoir, filter, or hoses, and resistance to shocks and side loads.
While traditional hydraulic systems use a central power unit that operates continuously at high speed and pressure, hybrid systems only consume energy when needed, thereby saving energy and reducing the risk of leaks.
### Technical Specifications

### Control System Integration
Hybrid actuators mostly work with standard servo motors and drives and are easily integrated into modern automation systems. In addition to AC servo motors, different motor types such as DC servo motors and induction motors can also be supported.
### Areas of Use
Hybrid actuators are used in a wide range of industries requiring precise, reliable linear motion, such as metal forming, bending, assembly presses, drilling, punching, material handling, and testing. Sectors such as automotive, aerospace, woodworking, security and defense, and plastics and metal manufacturing are key application areas.
### Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Hybrid actuators require less maintenance compared to traditional systems. The hydraulic fluid is sealed and maintenance-free, eliminating the need for routine lubrication or fluid service. This reduces operating costs and downtime.
Hybrid linear motion technology continues to offer innovations in efficiency, power, and ease of use by combining the advantages of electric and hydraulic systems. Kyntronics' expertise makes significant contributions to the industry in this field.
