Motor drivers provide power under PLC control; however, safety systems require additional measures to prevent operator inputs. Functions such as safe torque off (STO), safe limited speed (SLS), and safe stop (SS1) traditionally operate with wired safety outputs.
dSafe, on the other hand, manages safety functions directly through the motors using communication protocols like FSoE or PROFIsafe. This eliminates complex wiring issues and troubleshooting processes.
What is SLS?
In areas where operators work in close proximity, the SLS function automatically reduces motor speed. When an area scanner detects an operator, it reduces motor speed, increasing reaction time and ensuring safety.
What are SS1 and STO?
To safely stop the motor, either power is cut directly, or the motor is brought to a safe stop. Using a safety output, the motor is stopped in a controlled manner, and protective doors are opened. Without a safe stop function, the control system only releases the STO signal; this means an abrupt stop and risks safety.
