## IO-Link Integrated Load Cell in Dynamic Industrial Weighing
HBK has developed a sensor-integrated load cell to support real-time weighing data and process control in packaging automation and robotic handling systems.
As the speed and autonomy of automation systems increase, weighing systems are transforming from simple verification points into integrated process sensors. In this context, HBK has introduced the PW22i single point load cell with IO-Link communication for high-dynamic weighing applications in packaging machines and industrial robotics.
### Weighing Requirements in High-Speed Automation Environments
High-speed packaging lines, multi-head weighers, and robotic handling systems demand short cycle times, high repeatability, and stable measurement performance despite varying load conditions. These requirements stem from the need to support Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) targets and provide advanced diagnostics.
Traditional weighing technologies can encounter mechanical and communicative limitations, especially when dynamic loads and fast measurement cycles are required. This increases the importance of sensor-level integration in industrial automation architectures.
### Sensor Design for Dynamic Weighing Conditions
The PW22i single point load cell is designed for use in high-dynamic mechatronic systems, including filling systems, packaging equipment, and robotic end-effectors. By integrating IO-Link communication, the sensor enables direct data exchange with higher-level control systems.
Mechanical rigidity and a high natural resonant frequency allow for short settling times, supporting fast measurement cycles. These features provide repeatable measurements in dynamic environments, helping to reduce overfilling in packaging processes and maintain measurement stability in robotic applications.
### PW22i Features
- Nominal capacity options: 10 kg, 20 kg, and 50 kg
- C3MR accuracy class certification
- Support for defined metrological performance in industrial weighing applications
### Direct Integration into Industrial Communication Architectures
Thanks to IO-Link communication integration, the PW22i functions as an intelligent sensor in connected automation environments. The standard IO-Link interface and 4-pin M12 connection offer advantages for easy commissioning, device replacement, and retrofit operations in existing machines.
Local signal processing, status monitoring, and diagnostic functions increase the visibility of sensor status and process behavior. These features support predictive maintenance strategies in packaging automation and robotic production cells, contributing to data-driven process optimization.
### Mechanical Durability for Industrial Operating Conditions
The PW22i is designed for industrial environments with an IP67 protection rating and includes a patented overload protection that offers overload resistance up to five times its nominal capacity. This design ensures reliable operation against mechanical stress, eccentric loading, and transient forces commonly encountered in dynamic automation systems.
### Weighing within Connected Automation Systems
The integration of measurement functions with industrial communication interfaces transforms weighing sensors from standalone measuring devices into components of connected automation infrastructures.
Such sensor technologies enable machine builders and system integrators to directly incorporate weighing data into control strategies, supporting improved process stability, product quality, and operational performance in modern smart manufacturing environments.
