A 19-year-old woman, claiming that social media algorithms made her addicted and led her into depression, complained about the applications.

    COMPLAINING ABOUT ALGORITHMS
In a landmark lawsuit regarding social media addiction, the 19-year-old woman, identified as K.G.M., claims that the algorithms of social media platforms made her addicted to social media and that this situation negatively affected her mental health.

The defendants include Meta, owner of Instagram and Facebook, ByteDance, owner of TikTok, and Google, YouTube's parent company.

THIS WILL BE THE FIRST LAWSUIT
Social media companies argue that there is insufficient evidence to hold them responsible for harms such as depression and eating disorders mentioned by the 19-year-old woman. The companies are expected to argue that the alleged harms originated from third-party users.

K.G.M.'s lawyer, Matthew Bergman, told the BBC that this would be the first case where a social media company would be tried before a jury.

    ZUCKERBERG TO TESTIFY
K.G.M., who also sued the Snapchat app, reached a settlement last week after discussions with company officials.

One of the eagerly awaited witnesses the jury will hear is Meta's boss, Mark Zuckerberg; Zuckerberg is expected to testify early in the case. This is not Zuckerberg's first case on similar issues. In 2024, he told US senators that "current scientific studies have not shown any causal link between social media and young people having worse mental health outcomes."

During the same hearing, at the insistence of a senator, Zuckerberg apologized to the victims and their relatives who filled the room.
